He's always had very low self-confidence and thought very little of himself, and thought it was because he lacked power. That's why he always had quite the ego when it came to battling (according to Carmine), why he thought that defeating you would make Ogerpon choose him and why he worked so hard to become champ at BB academy.
This all comes to light before Terapagos awakens. He goes on a rant how the MC has everything he ever wanted, and he thought it was cause they're strong. That's why he wanted to best them.
But when everything goes to shit and the MC STILL wants him to join them, he realizes that strength doesn't matter. The MC has so many friends because they're friendly and open-hearted. Once Kieran realizes that, he lets go of his obsession with power.
Kinda funny how the writing got apparently so complex that even some adults don't understand it.
