The irony is that all of the black people in Unova are literally stereotypes that would be cancelled (basketball players, breakdancers, mammy Lenora). I never considered Iris "black", but King Nigger was president at the time, so having some kind of ethnic champion could have been a shoutout to that. Black people are historically comic relief in white/anglo culture, so I think the japs implemented them quite tastefully when they made gen 5.
