The last time this happened was back in X and Y, no counting remakes. Legends Arceus doesn't count because it was obviously meant to be a Sinnoh remake at first.

because Kukui was such a kino moment of taking the 3rd starter and being a boss they keep trying and failing to recreate it which they can't do with a normal rival. Kukui and Team Skull, 2 things SM did really well that GF keeps failing to recapture

I think the opposite. It’s more interesting to me seeing those characters actually being characters instead of just hollow shells to be moved around by the player.

I think it's because they aren't designed to be in-game characters you can fight anymore. It started with the SM/USUM characters looking similar and having their face constantly devoid of any soul. It became even worse with SV, they look nearly identical.

The reason they don't appear in the game is because you can go online to others' games.meaning they NEED to keep the alt pick free from the story bullshit, to show the fags who think they're a woman when the player goes online.
