They excelled because they didn't just remake Gold and Silver, but remade the entire Gen 2 by adding the best parts of Crystal into it.
Meanwhile FRLG were very limiting to try to make sense of there being new pokemon in Kanto, but it was a dumb decision.
Then ORAS felt lazy and rushed, taking out everything form Emerald, entire towns, taking out the Game Corner and offering no replacement, and taking out the Safari Zone and offering no replacement again, not to mention the lack of a Battle Frontier, Match Call, etc.
Overall, if you wanted the real Hoenn experience, you would be better off playing Emerald.
