The monkey is the hardest to play, almost throughout the whole game. The bird is the easiest and the turtle is only hard against team rocket and the ice gym

Turtle is kinda of a slog at first but not much of a problem to use later on if you know type matchups. Monkey is ridiculously good, and if you don't pick it that's minus 1 fire-type out of 3 that you can get in the game. Penguin is a steamroller with not many drawbacks, except that picking it means the aforementioned lack of fire-type diversity gets worse. Welcome to Sinnoh, enjoy your stay, and for the love of god catch an ice-type. You'll thank yourself later.

the monkey isn't THAT good. he gets fighting type which makes him weak to flying and not strong to poison and bug, which is all of team rockets pokemon.

also, his fire typing makes him weak versus rock types, a reoccurring type in the whole game

Most Poison types you’ll face are unevolved foddermons like Zubat & Stunky. He’s only weak to Rock for a very short time in the beginning of the game.

yeah but the guy doesn't get any other good moves. rock tomb is the only other move and it gets and that's only 50 power.

prinplup gets peck and meta claw, and grotle gets bite

way better

Worth it for dual STAB and being able to hit most things pre Fantina for super effective damage. Metal Claw isn’t much help when you’re only SE against Rock (at this point in the game) which your STAB Water moves are better anyway. By the time Grotle gets Bite, you should have Flame Wheel which is way better.

Empoleon is best at being an HM slave, but it's in the same gen as bibarel between that and tropius you've got em all covered.
Infernape is one of those starters that solos the game extremely comfortably. Learns basically every move you could want it to (including grass knot because for whatever reason all primate pokemon get absolute bullshit movesets) while being fast and strong.
Torterra easily looks the coolest and it's solid but it's nothing spectacular. Platinum has houndoom at least if you're really dying to have a fire type and don't want to pick the monkey.

and of course hes talking about lines
the only other fire types you could get would be rapidash and magmortar
thats it (heatran doesnt count)
they fixed this in palatium

Grind on Oreburgh Gate and the Oreburgh Mine. Evolve Chimchar into Monferno and you're good to go for the rest of the game.

Mach Punch and Close Combat are priority moves while Infernape himself outspeeds half the region, you won't have a problem unless you let some dumb shit slip, like trying to outspeed Maylene's Lucario or letting Candice set up her Frosslass. Sinnoh starters are phenomenal, all of the three are viable. It's all a matter of paying attention.

Ponyta is everywhere and Houndour comes a little later. So yeah, 1 out of 3. Platinum fixed jack shit.

Starter trio gives you an illusion of choice, but if you don't pick Chimchar you will be pretty much handcapping yourself out of one of the most used and useful types.

It's almost the same level of "find it yourself get fucked lmao" game design as the Gible cave. You can only find the ironworks if you bother backtracking and surfing in an empty area you wouldn't normally think would have something else other than an item or a TM. It's cool that it rewards you for exploring, but you shouldn't depend on it to get a fire type other than Rapidash.

I said it rewards backtracking and exploration but you shouldn't NEED to do it if all you want is a fire type that's not the horse. It gives you work for just one option instead of multiple one, and in one point in the entire game.

I might just have autism but as a kid I found magmar really quickly after getting surf and rock climb when I played blind because I always go back to the start of the game and surf every single body of water and climb every mountain to look for anything I missed. I agree you get cucked with fire types but that one isn't too ridiculous, it's not like the lake is hiding or anything, you just need to want to explore potential new paths to places which is what pokemon is all about.
I feel like even the gible cave is the kind of thing I could've found on my own with a little luck too (but I very much did not)

That's what i mean. I do the same in most runs that i play, but not everyone is as patient and it shouldn't be necessary to do all that just to have a little bit of diversity in your team.
