This game is Pokemon Odyssey, a self described fusion of Pokemon, Etrian Odyssey, and Made in Abyss. It features a new story and region heavily inspired by the stratums of the Etrian Odyssey games, complete with FOEs and plenty of remixes of Etrian music.
After that horrible last fucking game we did, this one looks really good. Let's see if it lives up to expectations...

I really liked this game. The music was good, gameplay was good, mapping was great with all the nice shortcuts and plenty of healing spots. Visually great as well, lots of different environments, and no fucking sewer level either. I really liked the seafaring part of the game with all the different islands, makes me wanna try elpis. The game also had a bunch of good pokemon and items available early which is rare nowadays. The sidequests weren't bad but they weren't very memorable except for the kid getting blown up. Hardmode is fucking hard, and my biggest complaint is that the chansey trainer isn't available earlier. At least the lucky egg should be available very early to make the battle house viable. Also the aether type seems terrible, it should be reworked or removed. Other then that I don't have many bad things to say about this, had a lot of fun. If the final version doesn't shit the bed this could easily be better then unbound by a country mile.

The character portraits are charming and vibrant, and the regional forms look great with a very small number of exceptions. If anyone knows what the area captain boss track is, I'd love to know.
The characters are overall likable and quirky without leaning too hard on the quirkiness in lieu of any further substance. The two "tropiest" characters, Olympia and Kitt, both get plenty of screentime where they do things aside from play to a writing style gimmick and they do them competently enough.
I think I might be the odd one out here, but I think overall I really like where the difficulty of this game's hard mode is at. It gives you ample tools to handle the variety of challenges it throws at you, and while I think this game's boss design leans a bit too hard on Le Weather Team when there's so much other designspace for creative things in Doubles, I do ultimately respect that some of the more complex strategies would've been difficult to make the AI play competently. At least when not playing a duo-type run, these fights felt very tough but never insurmountable, even the one where I played into his preferred weather (water) rather than trying to circumvent it. The non-weather captain bosses were a tremendous step down in difficulty despite being objectively well put together, which goes to show just how strong weather teams are in doubles.
>Stuff I don't have strong opinions on FoEs entirely fall off as threats after the 2nd area. We discussed this prior in the thread, but the game kind of had a catch-22 with making them catchable in that they couldn't be too powerful lest you not be able to use them in your new level cap.

Aether as a type was refreshingly not the common balancenigger type that's strong vs every good type / weak to every bad one and slapped on everywhere. But it's still pretty weak, so again, not sure what the point was there.
Using actual EO locations, names and even taking some characters from EO3 directly (Olympia, Abyssal God) is...odd. I get the feeling I as an EOfag am supposed to be basedfacing when I see that, but it just comes off as a bit offputting.
This also leads into the story, which I thought was...serviceable. It's a lot more wordy, character-filled, and edgy than the typical EO, which I don't think works in its favor (I assume it's the MiA influence). It's also just strictly worse than EO3's story, which it rips off heavily. But, it's fine.
>The Bad This game's relation with grinding is pretty fucking terrible. The grinding house is just not very good, and even the Chansey lady later is very slow as well. I think the exp gain formula is fucked due to the perma exp share. So, while I want to and am encouraged to train up new shit, that's not actually feasible.
But the worst shit is the EVs. Vitamins/Power items for EVs is a good idea, it's executed like shit here. You need 39000 to max out one stat's EVs, that's 78k for the whole mon, and you don't get that kind of money without macro-ing off the fountain for hours.
Again, this really pushes you into basically just making one team. Maybe this would be fine if it were easy, but Hard mode is not, and often necessitated swapping out team members.
Really should have just stuck to either making the fights straight up hard with no need to grind, or giving it a lot more leniency.
Very reminiscent of Ashen Frost, and while it's not that bad, it's definitely really annoying.

If the quality keeps up, I think this might become my favorite fangame/romhack we've done and I'd probably give it a 7-8 (in my head, 8 is the number I start thinking that a game is legitimately GOTY contender).
Just really enjoyed this one, kvetching about some of the plot elements and the desertnigger aside, and would happily recommend to anyone (like Ashen Frost, probably play on normal mode until/unless the grindingshit gets fixed). Maybe again that is the EO bias + whiplash of an actual quality game after the godawful fucking trash heap that was Full Moon, but regardless

Armaldo the Swift Swimmer, Masquerain with Quiver Dance and a large moveset, Eviolite Porygon2 who would often change weather, Ledian who alternated between Light Clay screen setup + legitimately hard hitter with priority and Power up Punch, etc. Even Parasect was surprisingly useful with Spore and Rage Powder allowing me to cuck the AI quite a bit on top of being surprisingly tanky.
Hoping to take St. Floyd to the final boss, probably replacing Kleavor who's a bit redundant with Armaldo, unless I want to try out the Boomburst Flygon + Exploud strat

Some of the doubles sets in this game are utterly miserable to face like Fake Out spam combined with sleep spam. Many fights felt way too overtuned for the all the wrong reasons, especially fights which involved weather. To make things even worse it's absolutely miserable to grind in this game for levels, one of the reasons I fell behind was due to this, I had to spend hours gaining miserably small amounts of EXP just to evolve my Pokemon, eventually you do open up an option to face a level 100 Chansey later in the game, but it's too little too late and it barely makes a difference since the perma EXP share screws EXP gain way too much, with how much this game incentivizes you to train up new party members, this is atrocious and I hope it gets addressed, to add on to this, the way you get EVs in this game is horrible, having to rely solely on vitamins for it is just not a good way to do it, even though farming money in this game is very easy, it's very tedious. The type changes are terrible though minimal and Aeather as a type is terrible, removing Fairy in favor of it was a mistake, Dragons and Dark types become way too difficult to check otherwise. For last I believe is inventory space, I don't understand why you would do this, why make the player rely on such an incredibly small inventory space for the entirety of the game? Especially considering this game has plenty of fetch quests and things of the sort, it becomes absolutely horrendous to juggle the inventory constantly.>Final verdict

An easy fix I think would have been to just increase the EVs both power items and vitamins give by a lot, maybe 64 in a stat. Alternatively, I know Elite Redux actually has the Demice/Showdown EV slider, but I don't know feasible that would be to implement here.
