Megas were the best of them but no denying they stopped being updated in gen 7 then were removed outright in gen 8. The only games listed here that weren't made during gen 6/7 are Unite, PGO*, PMD RT DX, and Smash Ultimate, the latter two of which simply carried over mechanics from the previous games instead of forgetting about them like Gamefreak likes to do
*PGO is technically a gen 6 game but megas weren't added until much later
It isn't a criticism of megas so much a criticism of Gamefreak for making these new mechanics just to throw them away next gen because they're apparently terrified of doing anything actually interesting with the core mechanics
