>Before the start of the game, Rainbow Rocket appeared at Aether Isle and unleashed UBs on it, SM protag, Kahunas, and Tapus went to Aether to combat them, but haven't been seen since
>Aether Island is abandoned with UBs roaming the halls freely
>It's been 4 years since the incident, and MC is an operative of the IP, with Looker contacting them via communicator throughout the story
>MC has been tasked to go undercover as a rookie trainer and investigate reports of Team Rocket sightings in Alola
>Kukui and his assistant Lusamine have joined the reformed Aether Foundation and ask MC and their rival to investigate why Totem pokemon have been spotted outside of their lairs, and why other pokemon have started appearing around Alola
>MC meets a Zygarde Core, and it inhabits a trinket of theirs, eventually becoming a Zydoge
>Story progresses with Totem encounters different places, but it's found out that each Totem has recently been forced from their lairs by a UB
>Totems join your team to help take down the UB inhabiting their lair
>Rainbow Rocket encounters begin happening, as they're looking for a powerful, dormant, pokemon (Necrozma)
>Team Skull (mostly Gladdion and Guzma) now actively hunt down these Rainbow Rockets, and Gladdion confesses Rainbow Rocket was what caused the incident at Aether Isle, and that he is the only person who didn't get sucked into an Ultra Wormhole and managed to escape the island
>At the "Lake of Sun/Moon," Team Skull guards were overwhelmed by Faba and some Ultra Recon Squad members
>MC and Gladdion go to the Lake, engaging Faba and URS members
>Faba explains he received communication from Rainbow Rocket, and he opened up the portal that brought RR
