Now it's just expected to have fossilmon in every Pokemon game
There is much more of a sense of rarity in early Pokemon in general so the fossilmon felt more rare and special
The aesthetics of the gen 1 fossilmon just feel more "fossily"
One of the first 2 expansions for the TCG was also called "Fossil"
It feels like there's more of a loose narrative to the gen 1 fossilmon
The game teases the existence of ancient pokemon with the museum in Pewter
Then you find the fossil in a dark cave and have to choose one even though you have no idea what it's for it feels important and mysterious
Then you can't actually use it until all the way at Cinnibar near the end of the game
Cinnabar feels very special because it's key to the overall theme of gen 1 being genetic manipulation and the fossilmons obviously fit into that
It's a perfect final town for the game because it feels so secretive and mysterious as if you've found a place hidden away from normal civilization at the far reaches of the world that contains arcane knowledge
It's reminiscent of other popular media of the 90s like Jurassic Park
Really the fossilmon are a perfect representation of Gen 1's style
