Considering they've earned 5.474 billion dollars from Switch title releases and a conservative 10m estimate of DLC sales for both SS and SV (and considering BDSP and Legends both broke 15m, it may be higher, the audience for people who buy mid-gen content clearly is there). they just don't care you're a povvo who can't afford to upgrade.

I love this pixel art, but wouldn't it have been better to use just one green and one pink? green and black squares for the dark parts such as legs and mask, green and white squares for the body and pink squares for the neck and petals of its trick-plant.

There are some gbc spinoff pokemon games
Unlike in the 3ds days, the usage of the built-in/ generic emulators likely isn't given to you unless you put your games behind Nintendo's subscription, and thus don't earn as much money as a full on sale
the Shantae collection had to build its own gbc emulator for example
3DS emulation very likely isn't even worked on for the Switch

Not profitable for them, absolutely cancerous to do on pre-gba versions, and the source code and/or knowledge might have been lost

How do you fit over 1000 fuckable critters into rgby? They had to cut some pokemons that were put into gen 2 all because of size limitations.

Romhacks don't necessarily have these size limitations, they can expand the ROM. Gen 1-2 are still limited to 254 species unless you do some asm hacks, which isn't out of the question thanks to the full disassembly project. All the data structures, encounter tables and so forth use 1 byte for the species. That's 256 possible values, minus one for nothing and one for egg. Additional hackery may be required to expand the ROM due to bank switching too.

Gen 3 is optimal for all-the-Pokemon hacks. GBA can handle 64 MB ROMs if not more, without bank switching nonsense. And the code already uses 2 bytes for the species so you're good unless you need more than 65536 or so species. It also runs really smoothly, supports more colorful sprites, and still uses easy-to-edit 2D tiles for the maps instead of awkward 3D models.

I'm not sure about emulators or GBArunner2, but for people playing on native hardware the limit is either 32 or 64 MB. Ezflash GBA flashcarts can do 32 MB loaded into PSRAM, or 64 MB if you use the option to write it to NOR flash. 3DS virtual console or open_agb_firm have a limit of 32 MB. So 32 MB is usually a good limit to try to stay under so everyone can play a hack. The base games are 16 MB so that gives 16 MB of extra space, plus the part of the original 16 MB that's unused. Given the size of GBA assets and code, that's a lot of space.

It doesn't work that way... The Gameboy it emulates still has a 16 bit address space, so 64 KB split up between 32 KB ROM, 8 KB save RAM, and the rest is video RAM and various memory mapped I/O. The 8 KB save memory and the top 16 KB of the ROM can be bank switched by the cartridge, which is how ROMs larger than 32 KB and saves larger than 8 KB work. A 1 MB ROM is one always-present 16 KB page of core code, plus 63 more pages that it swaps in and out to access additional code and resources.

In order to expand a GB ROM, you have to modify the code to access more pages. Then you're limited to how many pages the MBC chip in the cartridge supports. You could emulate one that supports more, assuming you also modify the code to use it appropriately. Though there's nothing stopping a physical cartridge in a real Gameboy from doing the same, presumably with the custom bank switcher logic implemented using an FPGA or a cheap microcontroller like STM32.

It'd be possible to make a Gameboy emulator that can handle larger ROMs, but it would require modifying the code of the game as well. It could be made to work on a real Gameboy too but the cartridge might require special hardware to handle a larger ROM with more banks.

Isn't that just the Super Gameboy peripheral? and technically you can just port the entire code to the GBA cartridge, which would be pointless since GF will just say "play FireRed/LeafGreen"

It's not really viable to port though since it's written in Gameboy assembly, not a higher level language like C. Or at least the "pokered" disassembly project on github is. I don't know about the original source code.

It wouldn't actually be that hard to modify a Gameboy emulator to add a new MBC chip type or modify the one gen 1 games have to allow higher page numbers and larger ROMs.

The Super Gameboy has similar specs as a normal Gameboy, but with an added facility the game can use to set border and color palette data. It also has a mode where a game can run native SNES code on the host system rather than being limited to the Gameboy CPU inside the Super Gameboy. The only game I know of that uses that though is the Gameboy version of Space Invaders, which displays full screen and in better color. The reason that wasn't done more is it's basically a separate game ROM on the cartridge, so it's like writing two games instead of one.

There's a reason it's like this. They're employing the Disney vault tactic. It's literally as simple as that. If all the games are available officially all the time, their business model would fall apart. Same reason Nintendo is purposely spotty with their back catalogue.

But luckily for anyone with an ounce of common sense, you can just emulate the games.
