Once "the Darkrai trainer" was established right from the jump, we knew who he'd be jobbing to since the anime made no effort to hide Tobias' presence. Ash was at his most battle-tistic, but he was nowhere near the level of wanked as, say, XY Ash who up to that point had only lost like 3 battles IIRC, had an actual fully evolved pseudo, Dragon-type AND a Not-Mega. Up til that point Ash was always the underdog, XY was the first time he actually felt like a protagonist so people got their hopes up I suppose.
I can't blame them too hard, but I never got too invested myself despite watching along. I was honest to god shocked when he bullshat Gladion out of a win.
