It made back its budget but it didn't pull Mario or Sonic movie numbers which is what Game Freak wanted no doubt, hence no sequel.

It doesn't help that it's entire appeal was "see Pokemon but in uncanny realistic CGI!" because the plot of the movie was nothing like what the casual audiences expected.

Also Justin Smith isn't a good actor, he can't carry a movie nor is he a marquee name. He plays the same character in every role he's in and said character is usually the worst, most annoying one.

This movie is fucking bizarre. It reminds me of the old 90s Mario Bros. movie in that it's ostensibly a kids movie but it takes place in this dark, seedy noir world that feels completely divorced from pokemon despite them being all over the film. Really out of place in 2019. I think it came about as a result of the anime films flopping, but TPC not at all considering that the last film the US got in theaters was almost 20 years old. So we ended up with this fever dream of a film that filled seats off nostalgia alone but probably had a pretty narrow demographic to appeal to. The whole detective pikachu IP in general is fucking weird and a testament to how fucked up TPC management was at the time.

Yes, but the movie was a flop. The budget was too high to make a decent return and the subject matter scared off a lot of kids/families. Say what you will of the recent Super Mario movie, but it knew how to appeal to general audiences.

Nothing, it was okay. Not amazing, not very memorable, but serviceable. IIRC the flaws I could point out were more-or-less on the same level as those I could point out for any mediocre movie.

How is this woke? I mean I'd understand if the movie made a big deal about him being black and how black people are underappreciated or something. But the actor being black doesn't make it woke. Him being black didn't matter and wasn't made into a big deal to be celebrated for pandering to other blacks.

Woke is like all of the sjw preaching in Spider-Man 2 but just the presence of a black person doesn't make something woke. I hate pandering and preaching as much as the next anon but Detective Pikachu wasn't that at all

This is exactly what I'm saying though anon. Tim is not worshiped for being black in the film. His being black has no relevance and is never mentioned in the movie. The character has flaws that he has to work to overcome and isn't treated like he's special or perfect just because he's a minority. That's what being "woke" is

I think the movie completely exceeded in the one thing I wanted it to succeed in, which is to showcase a believable live-action take on the pokemon world. That was my childhood dream realized right there. Most of the pokemon (definitely not all, looking at you Aipom) looked excellent.
The big problem is the writing and acting in general was just very mediocre on all fronts, so it's not very memorable at all. I'm sad it seems like all plans to make more movies got cancelled, I would love to get more movies set in this live-action universe.
