Dragon Quest (bottom) was a real innovation. It was the first JRPG ever made and introduced many of the mechanics that we came to love in the genre.
Dragon Quest II (left) developed the genre even further and was also the first game to have multiple party members, as well as a more fleshed out story. It wasn't as well received though, as it was rushed and too difficult.
Dragon Quest III (right) made up for all of II's shortcomings and is still regarded as one of the best JRPGs of all time
