So why was Popplio so dispised when it was revealed alongside the other Sun/Moon starters? Even before their evolutions were revealed. It has the cutest design out of the three of them. Did people just really hate water types back then?

Pretty sure a lot of it was just manufactured controversy for clicks, although plenty idiots did jump on the bandwagon. Popplio is a great starter.

I found it dumb and weird-looking compared to the other two, upon reveal.
Rowlet was my favorite by miles.

When the evolutions were revealed, however, I reconsidered Popplio because I actually really like Primarina.
So I chose Rowlet in SM and Popplio in USUM.
I even used Primarina again in another game.

I didn't hate it on Popp's reveal, but until saw the starter leak, I wasn't picking it due to always picking Fire types. It was only when I saw Prima, that I decided to pick it.

The real answer is because the owl was more unique and you can never go wrong with a cat (or a dog for that matter) meanwhile a sea lion already harkened back to Samurott who took inspiration from sea lions.
