i always kinda kick myself for not giving my ocs more NFE's (kinda fixing this for alto at least since he initially had a mismagius and exploud but i'm rolling those back to misdreavus and loudred) but a lot of the time i can't help it since i tend to like final stages the most. knowing when and when not to evolve pokemon is one of the things i find hardest about writing these stories because i prefer it for it to be reserved for the most dramatic and formative moments of a pokemon's character arc, so then with 3 stagers you gotta figure out how to make it impactful *twice*. i also don't link evolution solely to battles and it can be triggered by extreme emotion or personal growth. ex: when bibi's mienfoo officially retires from the roster because bibi realizes it doesn't actually enjoy battling, the reassurance it can still travel with its friends and that its trainer isn't mad or disappointed relieves its inner doubts and burdens leading to it becoming mienshao and of course not evolving something at all is a statement in and of itself like in your approach

Funny you say that, Ruka's Smoochum evolved into Jynx because of all the love she showed it. (I imagine the mechanics are similar to pokemon leveling up from pokemon-amie)
And yeah I mostly agree. Of Ruka's pokemon I know she has a marill evolve into an azumaril and a Oddish evolve twice into a Bellossom. But I feel like it's fun to imagine it spends a long time as a gloom before it finally evolves (especially cuz Ruka needs a stone to evolve it.)

The most tricky one is slowpoke, cuz in my mind I imagine that Shellder will constantly bite Slowpoke and turn it into slowbro. But Ruka doesn't like slowbro as much so she'll do everything she can to separate them, turning slowbro back into slowpoke. Meaning it constantly evolves and devolves. But I think as a slowbro it might be hands down her strongest pokemon.

Well, technically speaking, Slowpoke is the only Pokémon capable of DEvolving. I think one Pokédex entry says that when Slowbros lose their tail (be for natural reasons or Turban finally stopped eating it), they become a regular Slowpoke.

For me, Pokemon gain progress towards evolution just by existing, hence why evolved Pokemon can be found in the wild, and why just having Pokemon in your party will slowly level them up. I think that Pokémon can evolve early, but only by a little bit and there has to be some kind of catalyst, usually pressure to win a battle. Pokemon Amie/Refresh is a meme shoehorned in to waste valuable resources on selling a virtual pet to kids. For some Pokemon that kind of bonding makes sense but you’re not going to make any progress doing that kind of thing with more serious/violent Pokemon like Hydreigon or Pangoro. And then there’s stuff like motherfucking Klinklang and Magnezone that are literal machines. I don’t buy the idea that you can make a Pokémon stronger by petting and playing with them. Valuable development time was wasted animating so many Pokemon for a repetitive minigame.

That anon isn't missing the point as much as they are willfully ignoring it to serve the needs of their story. Granted that's something most fic authors do to a degree, as I think most writers try and capitalize on what they see as squandered potential. But that anon has so much disdain for Pokémon's core themes and general identity that I genuinely can't understand why they haven't just moved on to something like p*lw*rld because, to my knowledge, it seems exponentially more in line with what they want out of a monster collecting franchise. Or wholly original fiction because in my opinion you could just replace Alex's pokemon with different kinds of guns and have it make 0 difference since the fact that his Pokémon are reduced to tools doesn't seem like something they're particularly interested in commentating on or contrasting against other trainers.

I reserve most of this kind of stuff for my storyline because I’m generally not a fan of loredumping before the story is out. It’s still a long way off, but without going into detail: Even as a kid, he’s more focused in strategy building instead of bonding, which is why he travels across several regions for the purposes of catching Pokémon. However, his self-centeredness is more unconscious, because his sociopathy hasn’t completely manifested yet, it’s still only partial from the bullying he received. Then it just becomes generic revenge action fic #10234, Pokemon is what makes this unique. Palworld is dead already and had very little in the way of storyline and I’m not into sandbox games. Its premise is cool but ultimately was a flash in the pan.

It’s more just the fact that Pokemon is schizophrenic about what they want. There’s a huge disconnect between TPC depicting certain Pokémon as being inherently violent while also showing Trainers being cushy with them. I don’t see a logical connection between playtime and combative instincts.

It's precisely because the Pokemon in question are so violent that a Trainer's bond is so meaningful. To be able to take a whirlwind of violence and make it into a teddy bear speaks volumes about a Trainer's resolve. For all their faults, Pokemon yearn to be with people--if they can prove themselves worthy. Pokemon see humans as potential partners, while most people see Pokemon as tools or a childhood hobby to collect and discard at their convenience--that's why Trainers that can match their Pokemons' hearts become so exceptional.
Think about how many people in our own world dote on their pets but will, within the same breath that they brag about their favorite dog, say that their heckin doggerino doesn't have a soul because they're not as special as humans.
I forget where I was going with this, but you get the idea.

To me at least, it’s on a case my case basis. Some Pokémon such as the Ralts line are canonically very loyal, but others like the infamous Hydreigon respond more to strength. I think that there are three ways to tame a Pokémon, you make it love you (cute Pokemon), you make it respect you (tough Pokemon), or you make it fear you (unstable Pokemon). Each approach works less or more, being firm with a Pikachu will break its power, being firm with a Tyranitar will help it to control its power. Again, there’s a good amount of inconsistency with this kind of thing, with how Mega Evolution is depicted you would expect it to be reliant on the Friendship/Affection stat, but any Pokemon can Mega Evolve as soon as you have the stone, which leads me to believe that all you really need is just enough strength to sustain the power being poured in. There’s also never been an example of a failed Mega Evolution, and even though Lysandre lost, his Gyrados was still strong enough to sustain it.

Interestingly enough, the Mega Evolution question was answered in both the Anime and in Mystery Dungeon--when a Mon Mega Evolves, they're fighting an internal battle against that instinct to run rampant, and it's the presence of a Trainer that keeps them grounded. Without a Trainer in the equation, the savage instinct will win over, causing the Mon in question to lose control and start firing off all that excess energy until the Mega Evolution burns itself out.

I think that "bonding" primarily helps with obedience like with certain Pokemon in the anime that have a disobedience arc. I still don't see how such increases combative instincts, however. Pokemon Amie boosts do not make any kind of sense, they are just there to shoehorn the feature in through rewards that aren't logically correlated, while stuff like the Super Training does because it actually IS focused on combat. I'd for sure definitely never write in any kind of combat boosts from frivolous pet stuff. Dog fighters don't win by teaching shitbulls how to shake hands.

Tog cobble update for today instead of a bump!
Got the mine figured out (sorta), expanded base to a 2nd floor, almost got the fossil machine finished, alongside a healing station, AND I STILL CANNOT FIND A ZORUA.

The bridge itself is already hella cool as is, I love it.
My issue is about the bit of land to the right of it all (where the impromptu wheat farm is) cause that side faces inwards to the center, everytime I went back to the base I'd come in from that side. Besides that, expanding horizontally and vertically up the mountain might be a good idea overall. As it is we are a tad bit cramped and we all could use more room to expand our little corners.
Actually, might decide to turn the spruce building into a reception thingy instead and build my proper house closeby?

Correct! The drawing was made before any of the writing, so that little detail got spun around. And keeps on getting spun around because I use that artwork as my reference sheet. When I published the first episode, I had lost track of left from right and made the decision to not correct it.
The right red hand of Jupiter symbolism turned out to be a happy coincidence that proved too good not to stick with.

Gonna hop on some old questions! I feel like most of characters I've worked on so far have fully evolved mons but it kinda makes sense since they're supposed to be Elite Four/Champion. I plan to have more characters without a full team/nfe since obv those would be the norm.

Generally when it comes to teambuilding I try to make the mon a reflection of the character's, well, character. How much so varies ofc but if a mon evolves on-screen then I've always thought it should be tied to a significant point of change in relation to that connection.

I like Bibianon's Mienfoo example a lot, because you could interpret the underlying mechanics of the thing as something along the lines of "Mienfoo had reached a certain level that enabled it to evolve but due to a emotional hurdle it wasn't able to really take advantage of it until it overcame that." I don't think a Pokemon's growth is linear, and certain triggers can bring out explosive growth in a short time. People are like that too, really. It's just that Pokémon change in a much more apparent way.

All of Alex's Pokemon are fully evolved. Some like Aegislash and Hydrapple evolve quickly due to Alex hyperfocusing on getting their items, or some like Serperior having a lower level cap and others like Dragapult take more time due to having a higher Level requirement as well as some like Kingdra and Archaludon taking longer to find their items. My stuff plays like a difficulty hack, even in Act 1 everyone has full teams of six even if all of them are in their first stages. Currently, Weavile is the only one that evolves in Act 1 but I may change that to simply having nobody evolve until at least Interlude 1. People overwhelmingly voted in several polls for Alex to not catch any evolved Pokemon and given that his full arc spans a decade and a half I will probably be doing so in order to give a greater sense of progression. So you might be wondering, how am I supposed to balance such a precocious child? Well, during the Plasma days of Acts 2 and 3 he deliberately uses his weaker Pokemon like Scolipede combined with some shitmons that he catches for Colress like Luxray in order to obfuscate his identity, which caps his strength during that time.

okay question for everyone since i'm still booked n busy, on the topic of evolutions, is there a case where your oc had a fairly easy time evolving something? as much as my general rule is to have this sort of thing be used for drama, one exception i use for humor is bibi's first evolution, her applin, which evolves into dipplin when she takes her eyes off it for 5 minutes. the item you need to evolve it can be obtained pretty easily, she's probably having a picnic or something in the little corner of kitakami's map where you can buy syrupy apples and applin gets close enough to them to evolve. cue a double take as bibi has 0 clue what just happened

Anyway. David usually has no problem evolving his Pokémon since he studied about it during his trips. But his problems start when they "grow up". Say, Sceptyle. If it wasn't because they have been a team for too long, he would act as Charizard before reaching Mahogany's Dragon Den.
Then there are another ones. When he got Linoone, she escaped a lot because she liked to horde stuff, bringing one too many "I'm sorry, she knows Covet" moments. Then he got others that brought their inner courage. His Houndour was a scaredy pup, but after training he started to earn a sense of pride and honor (ironic coming from a Dark type), and when he started to fight, he got an air of "protector" with the team.
And then there's Luxray who got a crush because he caught her when it was a Lynx, and he was like "aw, ain't she a cute?". She wanted more attention the more she grew, but when she felt she was a third wheel, she chose to leave him before "he did". Which was a huge missunderstanding. David thought she was being friendly, but she wanted to be more than just his Pokémon, she wanted to be with him.

David still has to understand more about emotions. Him, while skillful, is very naive, so that goes wrong when he can't read the room.

I think you meant to respond to me. In my opinion a big part of "Pokemon Training" is forming a bond of trust between you and your Pokemon. Maybe the catch all of "Pet and give your pokemon treats so they like you" is a little specific but I'm thinking more of a bond between your pokemon and you.
For example. Ruka's Azumarill is very brawly. He doesn't really love the whole gyaru, makeup thing and he likes practicing combat. So in order to bond with him she gives him "BATTLE MAKEUP" (marks on his cheeks, angry looking eyeliner) and teaches him martial arts techniques (that she's just watching on the internet). That is Pokemon-Amie for me. A big part of loving your pokemon is finding out what they like and forming a bond. The stronger your bond the more they trust your judgement in battle. And the more they want to win. Ergo, EXP and the affection related abilities.

I think the best example of this is that Crobat can ONLY exist if you show friendship to Golbat, a 5 foot, 121 lb Bloodsucking bat. There is no reason why anyone would treat that giant sky vampire nicely but when you do it achieves a form that it never could have otherwise. You befriended a monster and made it a better pokemon.

Ruka's Jynx is the obvious answer. At the time Ruka didn't even know smoochum could evolve. She just did her hair, brushed it, did her makeup, took baths together, slept together, cooked together, ate together and read fashion mags together. And literally overnight Smoochum evolved into Jynx,
When it first happened Jynx was worried Ruka wouldn't like her anymore because she changed so much. But Ruka that Jynx was even CUTER than Smoochum and the rest is history.

Offhand her Oddish evolved pretty quickly. Oddish only won a battle or 2 before it evolved. Which is funny cuz it smells terrible and Ruka's stuck with it for a while. But Ruka still finds it cute and gives it just as much love as her other pokemon. Just with her nose pinned.

I mean to be fair, Ash was in the finals of Pokemon championships with a shitload of unevolved pokemon. If anything the fact that he even made it to the championship with a team of pokemon that evolve at level 20 is a testement to them being way stronger than average.

Yeah, that's always the problem with Ash and with using him as any sort of measuring stick. Both his final victories and final losses on every season are marred with extreme amounts of shit writing and plot contrivance. Just plain inconsistent, and with the inconsistency jumping from 10 to 1000 starting from after DP.

Slight cobble update for anyone who matters abt it, I left a trail of slatestone slabs going from the base bridge, connecting to another road up north. That's tbe general route I had planned to connect Green Mesa to the rest of the infrastructure, or at least act as a guideline.
If anyone could expand on it, or at least leave it as is, that'd be lovely. Doesn't have to be slabs, can be whatever, I just found those easier to mark out on the map.
Besides that, not much happened on my end besides expanding on my team. If any of the other toggers else could give a brief update on what they were up to, that'd be great.

and that's hard! I certainly don't have that! I'm working on it but I know for a fact that even if I have some half bit of talent it's not enough to truly *write*
that being said though I want to say that the act of writing doesn't have to feel like a monumental task. One of my favorite pieces of advice went something along the lines of "thinking is writing. outlining is writing. resting is writing."
now that qoute is about incorporating writing's block into the whole process but for me it also kinda highlights the sorta all-encompassing hunger that writing is for me. It's countless little things that eventually build up into one big thing and that's fuckin sick. just gotta work on the little things first and swing at it with all you got and then one day? bam. Camaraderie is dead and the nightmarish whore that is social media has killed it. Maybe I can't afford gas for a road trip, but there are many streets and places I can walk. In fact, I'll give you an example: when I was working as a night watch in a construction area, I saw many parents playing with their kids in the park nearby. And what was being built close by, so I had to be there? A fucking shooting range. And no, this wasn't in the US, it was here in Argentina.
And funny you mentioned army, because I voluntereed for a couple of years. Maybe I didn't reached those active duty guys, but I ended up in cavalry. I was working with horses, in the middle of the city, in a station where I could see trains and buses by just going up the first floor of my barracks. And while it was two years, people would consider it mundane, but it was what happened to me: being up for 8 hours straight at night because the guys in my shift got drunk. Pass out next day because I didn't slept. Get drunk once, and get the first shift all wet and tired because my sargent made me take a cold shower and run around so I don't sleep. Travel to some restricted areas, and do menial work like moving boxes or help a major when he is moving out base.
Life happens, whenever you do it or not. In fact, we are doing it right now.

Well I just figured the light grey one out, no longer need it really, though it may be good for the follow up project, if natural resources do not suffice.
Anyhow, day update for cobble! Started work on the town/city area, I want overlapping houses all across the mountains! Got some basic frames/shapes done so if anyone wants to decorate them, be my guest! If you don't like how some are shaped/positioned, also be my guest! Also just as I was writing this, I caught a fly that was pestering me mid flight in my hand, cool!

Got some of those custom picture frames made (15 or so, of which I call dibs on 6) so if you want the long awaited sequel of >>55951545, you now have the chance. Also make more of them, we need more of them.

The road to our place is still just the basic frame, nothing to report there besides giving a drawing IOU card to whoever gets that thing done.

I usually make OCs as filler or background characters. I entertain myself by giving them full storylines that the MC never sees.

One is basically your typical edgelord trainer (his team's a mix of Dark, Dragon, Steel, Ghost, and Fire types) but he has the absolute worst luck imaginable. Dumb fuck keeps wasting money on pokeballs trying to catch rare mons and the balls never fail to break. In a couple wips, his background storyarc led to him joining the local Evil Team where he worked as their getaway driver.
I'm lazy right now so the AI Generated image (left) is roughly what he looks like. Wrong outfit, but it's actually right on the build and hair.

Another is a Professor's Aide. He's a cold bastard who hates people and just wants to stay inside working on new poketech or studying Pokemon biology. His mons, in spite of him hating everything and everyone, have high Happiness stat because he considers them tools and he is not going to fuck up their maintenance like an idiot. The only reason why he's not part of an Evil Team himself is because he refuses to go to jail for someone else's goals.
AI generated image (right) is close but it lacks the passive bitch-face and the hair isn't ragged enough.

Cobble day update as the sun changes hands.
I did not contribute to building the houses nor terraform the trail yet.
However we did have a snack with Sandshrew, made automatic bread, and Silas got murdered (again).

What launcher are you using? The instal process varies from one to another, and slso the default one sucks dick.
I got prism set up as per a friend's recc and it is so retardproofed it's unreal. Legit all I did was drag and drop the zip file of the modpack in, make sure the right java was selected in settings, and you're set.

I skimmed a brief tutorial on setting up MultiMC, dropped the /vp/ mod list zip file into MultiMC, permitted 8gb of RAM instead of 2 (why is 2gb the default?), and I've been golden ever since. Hell fucking no I'm not. The last time I played Minecraft was a Hardcore Mode campaign hosted by my best friend while he was strapped to an oxygen tank. It was our grand finale for a youth spent building each other up. In school, in games, Pokemon, everything I did, I did with him and for him.
In the seven years I had known him, there wasn't a single day we didn't hang out together. I loved him, he was more like a sibling to me than my own blood. He was everything I pretend to be to this day and more, a brilliant mind destined for revolutionary success. I never told him any of that, of course. I was too young, too proud to be sincere. I hated him because I needed him more than he ever needed me. One day, I finally worked up the courage to call him and tell him how much he actually meant to me all those years. He already knew, but I needed to say the words.
By some spiteful and cruel cosmic prank, that was the morning his grandfather called to tell me he died peacefully in his sleep. The phone was in my fucking hands, man. My thumb was hovering over his name. He died young while I'm still here being nothing but me. It took six years of being mentally-incapable of doing anything to finally get a steady career going again and straighten out my life.
And after everything I've accomplished, it's still nothing compared to what he could have done in a fraction of the time. What else can a man do but keep going, never stopping, always climbing torwards a peak whose reach exceeds his grasp. A familiar hand will be waiting for him at the top.
He can start by taking a damn shower.

They were poorly designed, Golisopod’s ability is usually a handicap rather than a boon, Araquanid is completely outclassed by Golisopod, and Vikavolt not only doesn’t have U-Turn but also lost an ability that had the potential to bust it in exchange for one that it frankly doesn’t even need due to its typing. Most trolled bugs in existence.

You can tell when GF is scared of making a Pokemon too good, so they end up giving it a severe deficiency that renders it useless. In certain cases like ArchaluGOD's 60 SpDef forcing it to run AV, it's not enough to stop them, but the Alola bugs and countless others got the short end of the stick.

I'd say: lean into it. You are basically in a chuuni moment where a Dragon is giving its all. Just make the battle escalate to the point a master doing poses while screaming moves seems believable in the context of the story. Even stoic characters can break their limit when the situation gets desperate.
