I didnt play sword and shield but these are making me want to play it even more (i already planned to)
to be honest, the more they expand the 3D, the less appealing it looks. It is a thinf that hasnt to do inherently with neither 3D nor Gamefreak's skill, however, but they both play a role.
For example, the great aesthetics of gen 7 are replicable in gen 9 if you put the camera up and zoom out. It looks like playing a gen 7 game except the map is much more immense.
That however makes the general exploration much slower and the focus on distant objectives extremely more limited.
I think gen 9 in general is extremely smart because it truly encapsulates the meaning of freedom by letting you choose how to play in almost all manners and by the impeccable game balance.
The main problem though isnt neither Gamefreak nor 3D but openworld.
Openworld is such a dull gimmick that only works well with realistic games or games with very fantastic settings and that have a lot of details. In general though openworld games have just less than static games except for the fact of letting you explore freely.
This price isnt worth it, openworld is extremely overrated except in online gaming. And I think Gamefreak knows this and now that it played with the concept, it will evolve the series into something else, as Z-A shows by being set in a single city.
The fandom was begging for openworld. They did it, so now they can move on.
