Honestly all the Kantos are bland as fuck gameplay wise. Kanto will always be the white bread of Pokemon because Game Freak is a slave to nostalgia, especially genwunner nostalgia. I say RBY is better because of stuff like the grotesque sprites and Giovanni having Rhydon, not because the gameplay is necessarily superior.

gen 3 is a stark departure from the design philosophies of the first two gens. it's when the seires formula was solidified, and it resembles the games after it more than the ones before.
nobody can agree on what terms refer to which era of pokemon. but whatever the oldest one is, gen 3 isn't a part of it.

I’d think FRLG was better if it wasn’t for the fun jank in gen 1. Pokémon like Kabutops and Electrode feel pretty useless without speed-based crits. That alongside Pokémon like Hypno being broken are why I prefer it over the gen 3 and later remakes.

Depends on their reasoning why. Valid reasons I would argue being RBY being a bit more open than FRLG, slightly more replayable/arcadey, and the bundled Gen 1+Gen 2+Pokemon Stadium experience that work together

Totally understandable. Pokemon Stadium 1+2 are basically expansion packs for the original games. The gamecube ones don't really fit that role, they're games of their own that you can happen to interact with the gba games with.
