The starters are difficulty settings. Bulbasaur is the easy mode, Squirtle is normal difficulty, and Charmander is the hard mode. This is why they’re laid out on the professor’s table in the order of Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Charmander, as opposed to the more traditional Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle. They’re displayed in order of difficulty, rather than Pokédex order.

Charmander requires more training, and Squirtle only gets by because of Bubble and if you go directly to Misty or Nugget Bridge rival, Squirtle isn't enough. Charmander takes way too long to get any good moves and is absolutely the worst in gen 1.

I can solo Brock with Charmander the second it learns Ember except way faster because I don't need to twiddle my thumbs waiting for Leech Seed to drain HP.

Anon, Charmander doesn't level up into any one hit KO moves, and Charizard only gets Fissure, which you get for beating Giovanni.
You get Toxic's TM as a reward for beating Koga's gym. Regardless of what level you are, you get the OHKO much later than Toxic.

Bulbasaur's and Ivysaur's special stats are higher than Charmander and Charmeleon's respectively.
Furthermore, the difference in attack stat is almost negligble, with Bulbasaur only lagging behind by 3 points, and Ivysaur by 2.
At WORST, it takes a guaranteed 16 turns for Toxic+Leech Seed to faint a Pokemon. Most trainer AI do not use potions like that, and none have more than 4 potions.

Ember was a special attack that obliterated brocks geodudes and speed was high so crit hax and burn damage. It also did better through viridian forest and didn't get wiped by blues Pidgeotto as easy as Bulbasaur. Misty staryu and starmie are lower on the defense and charmeleons slash does great damage on them.

Real hard mode was playing yellow when you refuse to use mankey. Pikachu and the early mons are useless against brock

Charmander wasn't really horrible though. It has a weakness to the first two gyms but Brock can be beaten by Ember spam because lmao rock type Special stat and you have a few options to beat Misty by the time you reach her. It's also going to be dealing the most damage of the three starters on average and outspeeding more threats so it's really good for just blasting through certain parts of the game with team support.
Charmander also has two big things going for it:
>Early game is littered with Bug and Grass mons, which Charmander is well equipped to deal with if you don't want to go out of your way for a Spearow.
>Fire is the least accessible type of the three starting options, with alternatives not really showing up until around mid game. Bulbasaur has favorable match-ups against the first three gyms and has an immunity against the poison status (something that's really nice with the number of poison stings you'll have to tank early game). The only real negative in early game is that it's taking x4 damage from leech life, which turns a negligible damage source to something you actually have to think about. Sleep Powder access also makes it by far the best utility mon of the three with how busted sleep is for both battle and capture. If you're not doing a solo run Bulbasaur is the best team player of the three and fills more critical niches.

I'd argue that Charizard being a fire spin trapper that actually gets decent moves gives it a better niche in Stadium than Blastoise has being a generic bulky water that struggles to justify usage over other more interesting bulky waters like Starmie, Slowbro, Cloyster, and Lapras. Not really. Moltres is equally bad, you're just picking between beefier Fire Blasts or better coverage. Arcanine is straight ass in Gen 1, no reason to use it over any other Fire type aside from maybe Flareon. If you're going to pretend not to be retarded say Ninetales next time. Ninetales can at least be an annoyance.

Every strategy guide I read back in the day recommended you start with Bulbasaur because he makes the early game easy.

Frankly I was fine with it, I made it work. That said I was probably maxing out other Pokemon (particularly a Pidgey). I think I only got to Ivysaur without bothering to take it to Venasaur.
