ironically enough I had to stall this battle out a bit with the steel types, roselia having poison powder helps a ton, then kricketune cleaned up in the end

This game sucks.

>The Good
I'll be nicer than last time here.
The game looks good. As in, it's aesthetically pleasing for the most part and the tilesets were put to okay use, and in this update, there was at least a bit more visual variety, though not by much.
The spritework itself is also very good. Not really much to say there, you can tell there was a general focus on art this update, and at least in this area, they delivered.

I also have to commend the QOL, and some of the changes this update. The EV slider is always nice, the infinite repel really should be a default at this point, and so on.
Min Revives being available from shops instantly, as well as the early addition of the Healing Charm, made this game much more tolerable to get through, as well.

Later in the game, once I amassed enough money, I was basically never forced to run back to the Pokecenter constantly because some of my Pokemon got knocked out, but, part of this was due to me debugging my IVs to not spend on gummies and debugging in candies to not buy those, so there is a slight caveat there.

There also did seem to be parts of the game that were touched up to make them either more memorable (Clarity's fight) or slightly less obnoxious (the Ameliera family section). You also had a bit more emphasis on characters this update, such as with Laurel, Dareth, and so on, which was welcome.

All in all, I can see there was, at heart, a genuine effort to improve here.

>The Bad
Well, here we go

First off, while the SPRITEWORK is better than last time, the DESIGNS are not. Many of the redesigns for the characters, especially Zayn, the cultists, etc. are a terrible mishmash that look absolutely awful. And those are just the characters - this applies to a strong number of the fakemon as well. Incredibly busy designs that largely did not feel they had any thought put into them and just slapping on colors and madlib tier elements.

There's also the music. You had multiple mixing issues this version, with the regular Pokemon theme being way too loud, and other points I could barely hear anything even when turned to max volume. It also largely failed to be appropriate - Jackie's theme, Zeke/Zayn's themes, etc. anything with actual vocals is just embarrassing to listen to. It just sounds silly.

Fight design was better than last time, with some of the shittiness of the early game bosses tuned down quite a bit, but it still isn't great, and leads into a hard reverse difficulty curve, whereby 'climactic' battles are a complete joke compared to just beating up some rats on a farm.

I get it's unavoidable, you don't have the same circumstances someone like Demice can pull in Urmumium. But then I wonder why even bother to make a higher difficulty at all if it's just going to make early game annoying. This also wildly impacts monotypes and makes them considerably less fun than they should be - not something that applied to me, but still.

This leads into the side quests.
The sidequests on their own aren't fun to do, they don't reveal anything to me about the setting or introduce to me to characters, they don't give good rewards. TRs are an awful idea and I have zero desire to fight a sidequest boss multiple times, especially since a lot of the TRs you get end up being complete shit.
You have the 'gym leader bosses', who DO suffer from being heavily overtuned by early game standards when you first encounter them, only to then end up giving you terrible TRs in reward.

Imagine if there sidequests early on like taking a mission with one of your guildmates, and learning about them and how they react to different events. Or maybe a sidequest where you catch a thief, reveal he was working for Cionsta and got let go, and in the process learn about Laurel or Ayaka. They don't even have to give out good rewards, just anything to make me actually want to do them.

>The Ugly
The mapping in this game is just not acceptable.

Pic related is what every map in this game feels like. There's too much empty space, there's too much fluff, there's too many trainers. Traversing this game made me honestly go cross eyed out of sheer boredom.
The trainers aren't difficult. The problem is that, especially on Expert, they're good at crippling you. They'll often double into mon slots and knock shit out, frequently, and thus makes me spam revives out of battle, which leads to the next trainer, who knocks out a bunch of mons, rinse and repeat until I'm out of supplies.

I get it. It's supposed to simulate some kind of resource management thing. But I'm not really 'hurting for resources', I never felt 'in danger', I was just dreading running out of money and then getting stuck in the same loop of running hundreds of tiles, wasting minutes or hours just because of badly placed healing points.
This wasn't helped by the multiple wild Pokemon encounters shoved into every route this update, including NEW AREAS full of wild Pokemon, who DON'T give out money, and thus were just a net loss, for no other reason than I assume Ayrei was feeling malicious.

There was a LOT more fucking padding this update, for no good fucking reason. I don't know who the fuck asked for this, or why anyone thought this was a good idea, but holy fucking shit.

But the thing I truly cannot forgive is that I assume a lot of development time was put into the padding, where it could have been used elsewhere, whether for making certain scenes that needing fixing, or for more time to test the fucking game.

>The Story
Yeah, this needs a whole thing on its own.

Ayrei, please, take a writing seminar or some course. The writing in this game is nothing short of abominable.

You're presented with an interesting setting, one where Pokemon trainers need licenses to operate, and you have things like cults or this powerful alliance of regions - and it is never explored.

Every town in this game feels like a mockery of a regular town in a Pokemon game. I don't expect every location to have an absurd level of detail, but you can do better than having your half your NPCs say 'wow this shit is boring'. I get it's 'early' in the story and you don't want to reveal all your cards, but we're at the 40% mark, and nobody seems actually interested in the world around them.

Then there's how this game advances the plot.
So many times in this game, a bunch of information gets dropped on the player in a way that's almost entirely impersonal or done in such a way that I don't know what to think of it, despite the game treating it as this grand revelation.

Again, I don't expect an explanation for every mystery when it's introduced. But things like the 'warden' scene, or half the weird dream scenes, make me not care due to the foundation it's built on having zero substance whatsoever.
Am I supposed to feel proud or determined when Jackie tells me I'm a warden and I walk up some stairs in a schizo sequence, and then the scene just ends?
Or when the MC gains the power to suddenly start going into Zenth's memories and sees Vivian babbling nonsense?

There's a real failure to understand things like payoff in general, such as the Chairman, a character that's been on screen for less than five minutes, being revealed to be the mastermind and it being treated as some grand thing. It isn't, because I have no connection to him or reason to care.

And the 'care' shit extends to the characters...heavily.
When this game asks me to care about characters when most of my development with them is offscreen, or alluded to via exposition dumps over a black screen, you've gotten something rotten on your hands.

I don't expect to follow the students closely over the course of a in-game year's worth of gameplay. I do expect to actually have more interactions with them that logically lead into developing close knit relations with them.

So many of them just don't have anything to work with outside of maybe, one scene per character. If that's the problem, then simply stop making so many characters. I don't know what the purpose was of introducing a lot of them early when nothing was done with that, and I understand the purpose even less of mass killing off several characters with halfbaked story arcs or characters.

The bottom line is this: if you're going to make a story heavy game, then make a story heavy game. Learn how to pace properly, write dialogue well, and don't get caught up in things like designing 300 new regionals or epic cutscenes or a 50 person cast. Try to do more with less.

As it is now, the story is so unbelievably mindblowingly stupid, the dialogue so intensely cringeworthy, the cast full of either unlikable assholes or literal whos that it honestly makes it barely playable. I go through these horrible maps, and then have to confront these annoying and horribly written scenes devoid of any entertainment.
At least Rejuvenation, which has a story on par with this, has good gameplay.

>The Verdict
It's cliche to say, but I'm not even angry anymore, I'm just disappointed.

This version was very clearly rushed. I don't know why, but I can say that that attitude - the same one that promised a 'different game' - surrounding this entire project is the reason why we're viewing it so negatively.
I don't hate this game for being woke (it isn't, even), or because it was too le difficult, I hate it because it feels bad to play, it isn't fun.

Like RG said in his review, I don't want the game to be bad, or want to play a bad game. But there's clearly something very wrong at the fundamental core of this project.
I don't really care if this game gets better - that should be Ayrei's job - but it's a shame it got worse.

I rate this a 2-3/10.

The longest review I've done or will ever do, this game really didn't deserve it, it certainly won't get read, but I felt like writing it, so there.

once you get the avaros flute, you head to the forest clearing where you did the padding for the ice section, and it lets you fight a totem lapras that lets you catch it and then allows you to activate surf

surf seems really buggy right now though, most water can't be surfed on, areas it looks like you should be able to surf to you can't, and areas where you can surf don't really seem to do anything
also just very questionable why you'd lock surf behind this, but whatever, i guess it means no shitty water routes later (unless he unironically gets the idea to make you do the sidequests to eventually unlock surf, but fucking hell i can't realistically imagine that)

Pokemon are a literal self-defense method in universe and in pretty much every single form of media they've been depicted as being commanded to attack people, even this game does this repeatedly and it's the "good guys" doing it too, which makes it even dumber, Ayrei doesn't understand even the most basic aspects of Pokemon worldbuilding and I'm entirely certain this fangame like many others was just a shitty fanfiction that had Pokemon stapled over to garner attention.

I get we've complained nonstop for hours on end that this game was lacking character interaction, but as soon as we get some it's just them whining while pretty much nothing of value gets established. And of course right after this the player is forced to go back to the shitty routes you just trudged through to do a pointless task. I tried thinking of a few strategies to deal with the Dondozo at the start like Psych Up to copy the boosts, the issue is the AI is really unpredictable and the only Pokemon I have that learns the move is Watchog I think, I had to rely on Probopass and Hydrapple's sheer bulk to get through that, thankfully the Dondozo losses a shitload of health after clicking Wave Crash and I managed to safely switch in the Steel/Dragon Haxorus, it took down Tatsugiri with Scale Shot, switched out Hydrapple for Electrode to make Lapras' rain go away it went down, couldn't quite one shot the Lapras but it got flinched by Iron Head and then Archeops came in to pick off the Dark weak stragglers with Protosynthesis boosted Sucker Punches.

There's almost nothing, I liked the fakemon and I liked some of the regionals, my props to that, but of course there's caveats, they're way too overdesigned, many are passable and look just fine but a good number don't fit the Pokemon artstyle at all, granted with how even Gamefreak can't be bothered with that these days, I'll give it a pass, however, many older sprites are still fucking awful and are clearly clashing very, very hard with everything else, you should always focus on making sure everything fits under the same umbrella of quality and you need to make sure to build a strong foundation to them start trying to build your walls, but Ayrei seemingly forgot that, keep that in mind because it's going to be a recurring theme with this entire loathsome review. I appreciate the gummy system I suppose, it's far better in terms of design than Empire and it gives you 10 IVs on any stat a pop, I think that's pretty good to mend the gaping wound that are IVs, the healing booster and the permarepel are nice, and I think that's about it.

Ayrei has blatantly stolen/copied songs, scenes, plot beats from other games, that moron tries to sell you on this game having an unique soundtrack but it barely comes up, it's the same tired old songs I've heard in Rejuvenation, Desolation and Reborn, over and over and over and over again, the few actually unique tracks this game has are typically atmospheric and only come up during cutscenes or a few unique character themes, but they really don't fit with the game very well for the most part, this game really reminds me of Shistones in that respect, where it feels the dev is pasting over music from the popular fangame he has copied a bunch of crap off of in the hopes of making retards soiface over it, it's really stupid and I hate it. The wild battle theme is genuinely terrible, beyond awful, way too loud, way too obnoxious and it's one of the most common you'll be hearing all throughout the game, I had this game muted very often because I couldn't stand to hear it, the wild trainer theme and the reniggade grunt theme are not terrible but they get old really quickly, the rebornlikes all understood this and gave different themes to trainer battles as you progressed through the game because they understand it gets very dull to hear the same one over and over. This game was noted before for having incredibly short chapters that didn't established much and were over way too fast, we all talked about how the characters didn't get any time to get established and the story feels like it was designed by a zoomer with ADHD, the game couldn't settle down for even half a second, whenever it felt like something interesting would happen the chapter ends, whenever it looks like characters might get meaningful moments, the chapter ended. Ayrei instead of addressing this in a good way, by you know, flashing out the characters and making chapters meaningful and interesting, he added padding, so much fucking padding, an absolute fuckload of padding. I lost count how many gauntlets of either trainers or "wild" Pokemon I had to face and it has drained me of all my energy to get through them, I don't understand how anyone in their right mind would ever think this is tolerable, not even remotely, it's abysmally bad. It's so bad that it got to a point I didn't even want to fight battles anymore out of sheer boredom, you know a game is poorly designed when it makes you hate interacting with it's main form of gameplay, I want to play through a game, not suffer through a mindlessly pointless and repetitive task like I'm playing a shitty gatcha game, there's not even rewards for beating these gauntlets and they're forced onto you so much that it hurts to even recount it, because it's so soul crushingly boring and dull. This leads to the next issue.

It's so bad, it's so miserably bad, often routes and areas are straight lines with the occasional curves or maybe a dead end with a worthless item tempting you to get it, typically said worthless item is guarded by a Pokemon or trainer because you're not allowed to do anything in this game without suffering, it all just blends into some disgusting soup that makes me want to vomit due to the sheer nausea and repetition.

Nothing fucking happens or and you're just forced to sit through cutscene after cutscene sometimes, it's beyond tedious and shows a clear lack of passion and understanding of how to write even the most basic premises. The "bad guys" of the story have an actually sensible goal of wanting people to be able to train and own Pokemon how they see fit and Zenth despite the game wanting us to see him as a monster is arguably the only character in this game with a well flashed out motive and backstory, he has an actual goal when no other character has one.

I could keep going, for at least a few hours but I'm just tired, so very tired, this has been one of the worst games I've ever played, not just Pokemon games, games in general and I've played utter garbage. They think I didn’t play test that - Greninja vs 6 pokemon - first trainer (F.E.A.R.), but I was actually cooking. Actually, terrible as in both difficult and frustrating. Gradius V, for example, even the very first stage of the game is extremely hard than their predecessors; they throw a lot of things there, like Big Core MK and a bunch of Zelos Force.

Although you can get through most of the game without using items in battles, Cuckburner14 and I’ve have yet to accomplish that on two of the battles inside Fairy Battleship (Fairy Tale Jank of Zacian/Zamazenta, and Yancy in New World).

Anyways, you should have more confidence in yourself. We've played some games that don't even have a hundredth of the effort games like Rejuv have that blow it completely out of the water. There's a game called Perish Song, called Salt and Shadow now I believe, that was made in a year by like 4 dudes and it's arguably one of the best games we've ever done.

You clearly like Yugioh, so maybe take what you like from that franchise and think about how to effectively implement it into an idea for a fangame and build on that. If it's bad, so be it, probably be better than Virtualization, if it's good, then others will let you know.

I would rather have a World Legacy/Albaz Lore/Visas Lore anime series than another Arc V or Vrains, honestly. It also seems like it's far harder for them to fuck up because they can piggyback on other existing anime conventions, for better or worse, rather than have to concoct their own Konami-brand retardation to justify the product placement of the week being relevant in a situation regardless of how out of place or forced it is like Yuri just randomly whipping out the Ancient Gear structure deck that just released in Arc V instead of using his own cards.

It's not even archetype bloat that's the issue, it's lack of uniqueness, so few archetypes actually get anything that makes them truly unique, I love Rokkets for instance and they got shafted hard, they went from having an unique playstyle of being used as bullets by the Borrels to boss monster spam, Rokkets don't even have a single card that searches their niche but interesting backrow.

Yeah, I'd rather a lore anime than a mishandled mess again. Funny how in the long term Yuri and Dennis both got screwed hard by Konami in terms of getting their respective archetypes released because Komoney forced them to use AG cards during their duels, but it's not like it's the first time this happens, Akiza and Leo got completely shafted in 5Ds because the director liked Crow and Konami wanted to shill Blackwings harder than anything ever, funnily enough he even shows up during Arc V and gets shilled hard there too.
