All imo
1 has very little going for it other than nostalgia. FRLG are the better Kanto experience.
2 is good but very much held back by the system it's on and preserving backward compatibility with the wacky legacy mess of gen 1.
3-4 are really where they hit their stride. The complete overhaul of mechanics was very much needed. I'd call these peak old Pokemon.
5-7 bring more new stuff, get more story driven, and add serious quality of life improvements. I'd call these peak new Pokemon.
8-present bring higher res graphics, raid battles as something to keep doing postgame, and more quality of life improvements, but are seriously hampered by a hurried development cycle.
