Crystal is also bad. HGSS just takes Gen2’s dogshit pacing and level curve and just combines it with Gen4’s shitty engine while adding useless fluff.
All forms of Johto are terrible.

Gen 2 is slower than gen 4. You don't notice because Johto is a short region and everything is underleveled compared to Sinnoh. Then you reach Red and feel the slow HP scrolling in full effect, but millenniggers called it "tension."

Johto being “short” is a myth. Someone compared the maps for first 4 regions and the only reason Johto is “small” is because 2 huge routes before the Elite 4 are consider “Kanto” for some stupid reason despite being new content inly in the Johto games, and Sinnoh only ended up slighty bigger even with several event only areas being counted.

The only thing levels would affect is HP bar. Gen 4 has other issues like how it takes forever to save after doing anything or surfing speed being slow which is the actual source of the slowness.

speaking of crystal version, I recently picked it back up on VC on my ds. I've only ever finished silver version (a long time ago) and I had a question about pic related.
Sunkern learns mega drain at 10. Sunflora learns razor leaf at 10. I know in modern games there is no issue but in gen 2, or crystal specifically, can I evolve Sunkern at level 10 and have it/Sunflora learn both moves simultaneously?

I haven’t tried it, but what you should be able have Sunkern Mega Drain, then
Evolve it at the same level, it should learn Razor leaf right after it evolves since pokemon learn moves while evolving all the time

All this happens in the regular games too, you didn't notice it with your nostalgia goggles on. The HP scrolling is greatly exaggerated in OU. You could argue that Nintendo Cup 2000 is faster, but it wasn't played on GSC, nor is it a relevant format anymore.

Crystal doesn't have pokeathalon and customizable safari zone which were the two best features of HGSS.
Other than that it was a painful slog to play through HGSS with only the paint-dryingly boring gen 1 and 2 pokedex to play with, and a copypaste of kanto from gen 1 as a lazy selling point of more content that was inferior to just playing FireRed's version of kanto.

Not really. HGSS tried to remedy GSC's horrendous teambuilding with the new safari zone and move-based evolutions, but the former is an absolute mess and slog to set up and use properly (on top of relying on RNG to get the right terrain for certain encounters) and the latter restricts everyone to one evolution since there's only one heart scale in Johto. Team building in Johto is still terrible.
