Because the majority of current pokefans are ultra casuals who know nothing about Johto since Johto hasn’t has a game in 15 years. It’s easy for them to be gaslit by shills for new games who use johto as a whipping boy for all the franchise problems

This literally true, Masuda even said in his blog that FRLG and its postgame especially served as the testing ground for DP. On top of that Lucas and Dawn are designs branched off Red and Leaf, this becomes especially apparent since Red is a (unused) placeholder sprite for the trainer card in the beta.

In some ways it tried to, but it mostly kept the same old Gen 1 8 gym, elite four formula, instead of trying to innovate. I would probably agree based on process of elimination but GS and SV have equally as strong arguments for that.
