"Mentor" for Ash like Brock and shat on him when he was an arrogant shithead, but once Ash mellowed out, started learning shit on his own, and stopped being an asshole most of the time, she honestly became redundant becoming a gag character alongside Brock. They did have dabble with Misty with that Whirl Island cup tournament but when they moved on from that she was back to square one.
Honestly, taking her out of the series was the smartest thing to do.There was nothing else to be done other than maybe making Misty an Elite Four or some shit which will never happen. She had little adventures of her own becoming a real gym leader which was the best we could hope for for her character. And what happened to Brock, why didn't he get the short end of the stick? Apparently Brock was super popular for the Japs and as such is jokingly called the real heroine of the anime, which Misty did not have the luxury of being. Hence staying and acted as an older figure for both Ash and the accompanying heroine.
