Only one that is not a downgrade is FRLG, but the problem is that Kanto fucking sucks.

I was gonna make my own thread, but I'll just use this one instead. Any tips for a first time Pokemon enjoyer? My research is telling me that the only games worth playing are LG and SS. Here's SS on my new DSi LL and naturally I'm picking the blue croccy pokemon. I heard there's some integration with FR/LG if you have a cartridge, but I guess I'm cucked out of that am I?

I'm beginning my new journey!

It's not really integration. You can transfer Pokémon from the Gen 3 games (Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald) if you have a Gen 3 cartridge. This primarily applies toward Ribbon Masters now due to modern games nuking transfer moves.
By the way, I recommend playing Emerald and Platinum as well.

The games are best enjoyed when you take them for what they are: mediocre JRPS with soulful music and visuals and fun team building with top-tier monster designs and enjoyable mechanics. HGSS especially fall into that. Take your time and explore. HGSS are the most soulful games in the franchise other than the original GSC.

I would've said play HG over SS for a first time, as I think Ho-Oh and the Bell Tower will give you an overall better impression, but SoulSilver's just as good ignoring that.

You should also play Emerald and Platinum. I would say Emerald, Platinum and HGSS are the only Pokémon games that actually matter. Gen 5 may be of interest, but that's when the franchise started becoming gay and linear and started putting more focus on the humans rather than the Pokémon. It may be your thing, try it if you enjoy the other games.

I thought there was some thing where you if you have the cartridge plugged in (DS Lite) you get different pokemon spawning or something, not sure. Why would I play Emerald if LG exists by the way? I checked the starters and they're all memes, aside from Mudkip, but he's only a thing becuase of old 4chan memes. Nobody cares about those. FR/LG has the real good starters that people know. I'm surprised it got only 9% in the poll. Same thing with Platinum. Why play that if SS exists?

To be completely honest I kinda lied. LG was my first Pokemon game ever. Started playing it like 2 weeks ago I think when I got my Gamecube gameboy player. Put like 40 hours into it and now I'm at the elite 4 and taking a break because my DSi arrived and I'm too excited to play it, so SS it is. Technically my second Pokemon game ever. In the span of a month.

Ah, that's only in Platinum.
Also, Emerald and Platinum take place in different regions than FRLG and HGSS, Hoenn and Sinnoh, each of them with plenty of endgame content. And in the case of Hoenn, you can box your starter if you dislike them all.

Huh, honestly I don't know which I'd put over the other myself but I thought they'd be a lot closer in terms of numbers. Though I suppose for all the casualization it does add some neat stuff, lord knows even after all these years people still love the Dexnav and Soaring.
