On that note, the random trainer team quality goes up quite a bit too so get into the mindset of treating a lot of them like minibosses ala victory road.

Yeah I absolutely love Vaultevour and it's been a mainstay ever since I evolved it from a Chompchest, but the absurd amount of mons with Fighting coverage I've been running into has been making it kinda rough to use it, it also suffers from 4 move syndrome really badly.
Cannonance on the other hand is a bit more solid, it just hits like a fucking truck and it's movepool is amazing, I'll probably mostly keep my team intact since I'm not sure I'd want to try anything new by this point.

The combat system in this game is incredibly well put together with a huge variety of mons creating potentially a large number of possible strategies for a mix-and-match style Final Fantasy. I think this game is in my top 3 favorite classic Final Fantasy games and handles the combat of those games better than Square did for the most part. While the ability lists do get really cluttered by endgame, none of the mons I used except Eeveeon had a movepool deep enough that this was a genuine hinderance in battle as opposed to a minor UI annoyance. Lastly, I counted all of zero pozzed elements, references or casual mentions in this playthrough. It's very rare you find a fangame 100% free of wokeshit and this one earns a big gold star for that.
I'm not really sure where my final score lies because it implies these ratings are all systematic and each score has a bunch of itemized factors that can be weighed against each other as opposed to a lot of it just being based on a rough idea of quality and vibes. I'll give this game a 9.25/10. It's easily in the top 5 fangames I've played, maybe even top 3. If anything this has made me realize I need to revise my tierlist.

This game really spoiled me by giving your Pokemon some screentime, even just a few lines, and a few moments of saving your ass. I wish you could interact with your Eevee more, but this is already more than the other Pokemon games that are really about sucking off muh human characters, who end up being a bunch of faggots and cucks anyway.
The devs can say it'd be too hard to make scenes for all the mons someone can have, but dragging you to safety even through its own exhaustion is something you'd think is generic enough. An Eevee does it, and that makes it the best, but shouldn't other mons be asking why they can't do that too?
I think only Ashen Frost even came close to a pokemon character, with Truffles. I guess there's Reminisencia, but the legendaries aren't exactly yours

There's some that are really hard (Clover, Redux, old Rejuv Intense) games that afaik played with their cards all above the table and while they had mechanical advantages from fields and single use sneeds, there were never any hidden AI-only modifiers that I could observe.
I've only caught a very small number of games outright cheating this blatantly, but I've admittedly played far more romhacks than fangames where it's far harder on a technical level to implement that kind of cheating even if the dev wanted to, so that naturally filters a lot of shitter devs who might otherwise do so.

demice's hard mode of ashen frost does it as well, demice's soulstones 2's higher difficulties do it (in fact, the higher difficulties in soulstones 2 are literally just 'you have completely unreasonable rng' instead of actually being harder)
rejuv intense did it as well, as does azure intense, but wasn't overall as obnoxious as this shit or the demice/moto faggotry. like the worst in rejuv intense was...the last geara fight not allowing you to change the haunted field, i guess? and that's at the very end of the game. might've gotten worse later on though

Do you have any recommendations for what I play next that's both a reasonably hard (and most importantly good) game but also doesn't indulge in any of this under the table slight of hand? I'm fine with opponents having better cards (multiple megas, perfect EV/IV/Pulse2, etc) to play than I do as long as they're not palming aces when the dealer's not looking, so to speak.

if you don't want to do that, you could try perish song/salt and shadow, it's a 'soulslike' fangame, but the difficulty is extremely manageable and it's nowhere near as pretentious as it sounds. in fact i'd go so far as to say it's possibly the best handled difficulty of any fangame we've done.
other than that, maybe desolation, or tectonic, if you haven't tried those?

I think you can steal the water, then flee from the trainer battle with the fountain guardian and then repeat to get more water, it's really valuable since healing items are very scarce.
Note that beating the fountain guardian isn't a good call since the game will go full scorched earth nigger mode and turn the fountain into sludge after you beat him, granted this does allow you to get a bunch of black sludge, so there's that. FormerlyAshime !vRZhOalgQo
