This shit STILL boggles my mind. At least Ghost being Physical made sense with the first Ghost-type move being Lick. What the fuck is Dark’s excuse?

Really should've been the opposite, the ghosts in gens 2-3 preferred special attacks and the dark types were all physically offensive with the exceptions of houndoom and banette. Lick becoming a special move doesn't make any less sense than bite being a special move. I think they just wanted to keep it consistent with Gen 1 where ghost was physical, but it's not like anyone would have fucking noticed because no one is running the 20BP lick on their gengar in RBY

Yeah because prior to that all Dark moves were special-attacking.
Most of the early Dark moves were stuff like Bite and Thief that should reasonably be physical. But the type was made special for balance reasons, because it was created to nerf Psychic which was OP in gen 1.

It's my belief they were trying to keep the count of physical and special types close to even in Gen 2. Between dark and steel, steel is more physical as a concept. Hence dark was made special so it became a 9-8 split instead of 10-7.

The physical special split was a mistake. I get why you'd want physical elemental punches and stuff like Crabhammer and Waterfall, but why the fuck where Gust, Acid and Sludge changed to be special.

kek what a retard. People love to bitch and cry about one or two types they don't know understand the attacking category for but there are countless moves for which the attack category makes absolutely no sense for. And that is reason number #37 why the split was a mistake.

It was a mixed attacker like all the other Dark types excepting Sneasel.
