I think a lot of people like the idea of Pokemon more than they *actually* like Pokemon, and that's fair because it's a franchise that probably has a lot more potential than it's ever realized. they still want to engage with the franchise but it doesn't ever live up to the version in their head, so with no strong positive feelings towards any particular games, instead they project their feelings of disappointment onto a single gen and whatever wasted potential it's perceived to have.
like I can understand drawing a line at a certain point in the franchise where the mechanics have changed too much, or are too archaic for you. but when it's people cherrypicking random generations to hate, I really question if they like the franchise at all, or just their idea of what it should be.
