The games would be more interesting if rivals could win battles against you and future interactions depend on how many battles were lost and won.

Some JRPGs let you fight an advanced boss only for it to beat you up, like FFV, Chrono Trigger, just to make the final confrontation more personal.

Pokemon Yellow kind of did that with the rival’s eevee changing evolutions depending on if you won or lost.

You can lose to Nemona, though it doesn't change much.
The game would be much better if you could actually lose to Kieran and have the story play out from there, honestly.

I was thinking the whole time that the story could've gotten more interesting had Kieran won - and he almost did, given I decided on a whim to start training a new team from scratch in Kitakami.
