But the fact that it's actually canon is what makes it interesting to me. Pokemon usually doesn't get that specific with purely biological details, as much as I wish they would. "The females of this species become infertile after the first life stage, but the males remain fertile throughout their life" sounds more like something you'd read in a spec evo project, not Pokemon.
I think it's a result of early installment weirdness. Gen 1 was somewhat more "grounded" and sci-fi oriented than the later generations, which took on a more fantasy approach.
