For 3>4 the gen 4 game can be on anything but the gen 3 has to be on an Ezflash Omega Definitive Edition in mode 2/link. Or you can put both saves on a PC, load them in MelonDS, do the "migrate" step on the main menu, and then do the catching show back on a real DS.
For 4>5, 5 can be anything, even a ROM on a 3DS, but 4 must be an authentic retail cartridge. You can use MelonDS, but you need DS firmware files, it's a bit jank, and you have to play the ball flinging minigame in the emulator.
And if you want to do 5>Bank on a 3DS, you can get PokeTransporter to read a save file on the SD using the homebrew app DreamRadarCartRedirect (which can also make Dream Radar put its loot in a B2W2 save file, as the name suggests).
Or you can use Pkhex on PC, PKSM on 3DS, or pkmn-chest on DSi to pick up the Pokemon you want to transfer and put them in the newer gen save file, and not bother with the minigames and technical issues.
