Team Star was fine, even if it skirted the line between unneeded obligation and doing their own thing.

Team Yell truly was unneeded, that is certain. I wonder if the backlash towards them would even exist if they were just rambanctious fans and that was it, no evil team moniker.

Pokemon needs to drop Evil Teams entirely already, and that includes "le subversive delinquents".
It's clear no one at GameFreak actually has the passion or creativity to write an actual antagonistic group anymore, meanwhile you have much more enjoyable standalone antagonists like Volo and the Paldea Professor who are perfectly fine as solo acts and don't need a whole legion of Saturday Morning Cartoon Goons backing them up.

the problem with yell and skull is that they don’t even meaningfully tie into the game’s story. they’re there so the games can have a team something, and also as a distraction for the player until the real plot can start. ideally, they should be more of a stepping stone or at least a thematic contrast to the real antagonists.

Well for one, I don't think that's true. Guzma is a major player in the story and team skull is an extension of him. Also the infiltration of Po town is one of the few setpieced in SM that I can actually remember. But also I like that they're not an "organization" like team rockets yakuza. Or a cult like some of the later teams. They're truly just a group of assholes hassling you for no reason. It's honestly a breath of fresh air to have an evil team that's not planning world domination or to like...blow up the earth or some dumb shit. And if you want that sorta thing, Aether foundation exists. You get both.
