What are you taking about? This aesthetic has existed since G1: Diglett, Chansey, Clefairy, Ditto. Just as many Johtomon have that Kanto DQ touch that so many extreme nostalgiafags praise, Steelix, Scizzor, Tyranitar, Skarmory, Houndoom.

If there is a real complaint with G2 it is that it doesn't feel like a standalone entity, but rather just a complement to G1.

Because they now had to consider the poor merchandise makers and anime animators who struggled making accurate depictions of complex bastards like Cloyster and Rhyhorn, so most of Johto's Pokemon were made far simpler so it'd be easier to depict them.

gen 1, gen 2 and gen 3 I feel are good. gen 3 is a bit more of a departure from gen 1 and 2 but is still good.

gen 4 is too much of a depature and about 90% of the evolutions given to older pokemon look terrible.
gen 5 onwards is 90% 'eh' and 10 'oh wow this is really cool'

Salamance unironically looks like a modern pokemon due to its shitty wings.

This Anon gets it. It's a weird mix because you have the start of modern Pokemon design that feels out of place (Gardevoir, Salamence) but there's no overall designs that feel outright garbage. Some designs feel a bit too sleek or too colorful, but others could easily slot into older gens without issue

I don't hate Gen 3 designs overall, in fact it's one of the gens that feels very consistent in terms of overall quality, but it did have some eyebrow raisers and was the first big departure from the classic Pokemon design, which I feel didn't really start seeing the "This doesn't look like a Pokemon issue" until Gen 4 (and it really got bad come Gen 7+)

Wow, I thought I was the only one who had a problem with Salamence's Wings. They just looked tacked on and barely look like it would even be able to fly, which wouldn't be that much of an issue except Flight is the main concept behind Salamence. I still like Salamence, and love the overall idea behind the evolution line, but its my least favorite member.

Gen 3 may have gone back to more "cool monsters" but the execution is different than it was in Gen 1 a lot of the time.
Gen 3 goes more in with colors due to the GBA hardware allowing for way more colors on the screen at once
