Can I have thoughts on a character intro please? I always worry that I waver between overly wordy and too simple without striking a good balance.

Rain poured down relentlessly on the open plains, soaking everything that dared to venture out from under cover. Only two figures were out in the open. A Rapidash galloping at breakneck pace, fire streaming out in its wake, and a man perched atop in a ranger's uniform.
He half-sat on its back, leant right over with one hand gripping the reigns, the other holding a pair of battered binoculars up to his face as he scanned the miles of sodden grass stretching out around him.
One of the scouts had reported someone wandering about in the torrential rain. Someone who was clearly not equipped for the weather. ‘Someone’, that's it. No real description, not even a rough size or the colour of the their clothes. The scout couldn't get a proper look at them through the rain, so all the ranger had to go off of was a vague location: “The hilly bit of the plains near North Duskwood”.
With a piercing whistle and a few quick hand signals he called down his lookout. A Kilowattrel, perfectly at home in the storm, circled lower and lower until it was almost at eye level, playfully brushing the ranger’s hat with its wing tips.
“Now isn't the time for games, Blitz,” the ranger grumbled. “Have you spotted anything?”
Blitz perched on the his shoulder, squawking and chittering in his ear. ‘East two miles, South a little, near big rocks, human-sized unsure, dark dark blue’. The ranger muttered the words to himself as he translated, mapping out the plains in his head. Where would he shelter if he was caught out here? That is, assuming this person had any sense. Assuming they weren't stood out in the field like a scarecrow. “Well,” he barked. “Lead the way!” He patted the Rapidash’s flank, bore down behind its neck and set off. Golem rock, that had to be the place. He had to find the ‘someone’. He always did.

This was a surprisingly good creative exercise. Some of the below could be used as a jumping off point. I'll use this day off to do some more of these and get back to writing Silas's ep 2.

My OC would be mommy trainer that was sad when her ten year old left on a pokemon journey to became a trainer. She was bored at home, her husband working long hours, so she started to study pokemon, to better bond with her son once he becomes a famous trainer and champion. She decides to purchase a pokemon pet of her own and accidentally ended participating in the local battle scene, which sort of snowballs, so at the ripe age of 30 she leaves her hometown and starts an adventure of her own, trying to get admiration and make her son proud. She would have thematic list of motherly, milfy pokemons, think Tsareena, Gardevoir, Lopunny, Goodra, Milktank, Lapras. She would be very nice towards young trainers, always motivate them to become the very best, even when she crushes them to a pulp. Big ara ara energy and eccentric kitsch fashion sense, I think form-fitting bodycon dress with leopard print pattern would fit.

As far as I'm aware Paldean NPCs don't EV invest so theoretically he probably wouldn't even need to to Tera because Dragapult has Speed EVs and Electrode doesn't. But if for some reason Ionoid in universe decided to EV train then Dragapult doesn't actually even need to Tera in order to survive.

Switch to Archaludon instead of U-Turning, its electric resistance means that it can tank the incoming Thunder just fine even if it has mediocre SpDef. Although, this now opens the question of why he didn't open with Archaludon in the first place. Maybe he was feeling cocky that day.

It's the nu/k/lear option. He's enough of a sociopath to be willing to violate his own principles if he has to. It would be the same thing with the potential Pawniard catch that I pitched a while ago, he's willing to evolve a jobmon because it has a typing that he likes and insane BST and ability. Something something desperate times, desperate measures

Yeah, that's what I did. The damage calculator does that on its own, if you put 0 EV ATK on Dragapult you get

Because it translates Dragapult's ATK to "Electrode's ATK"

This is a VGC battle sim so the Pokemon were Level 50 instead of Level 100 (check pic related)

Basically the pult was band + adamant, which provides enough atk for foul play to ohko it, as well as make pult slow enough that trode outspeeds it under normal circumstances (unless trode is +Spe nature, in which case it outspeeds every non-scarf pult)

Maybe add red bowtie to add some more red along with his scarf that later gets added to his special outfit. Maybe he adds the tie once he gets older (13-14 probably) as when he's 10 he probably wouldn't bother with a tie. Tie later carries over to his new outfit once he gets older.

firstly, you should make an npc, i think, the best is to make an npc oc, who's not even relevant to main plot or exists as the background character, lurking in shadows or past. imo, gym leader is a not bad thing, but please don't make them TOO cool, or make them cool, but still limit them (like, you make a strongest gym leader in the region, but world-wide they're like only #35). Or you can make character who just acts like a normal person, but with pokemon, it goes fine, has more soul since its a normal person who doesn't makes their pokemon fight.

But I include Pokemon plenty in my stuff, it's just that Emily's not outright reliant on her Pokemon like normal trainers are and it's more of a 50:50 split between her and her Pokemon.

Yeah, but that loses a lot of footing once you start asking some specific questions, such as "Where the fuck was the National Guard during BW2?" Or, go broader, why do these regions replace the states we know, but not the countries? Some regions like Galar and Paldea ARE the entire landmass, so would Britain and Spain be completely replaced while other countries aren't? Where the fuck are the regions of all the other countries? if by where to start you mean making your own oc, think of a concept that appeals to you, it's good to think of what suits the canon and what others might think of your character, but the best way to ensure you maintain the motivation to keep working on them is by making something that interests you first and foremost. as for who our regulars are, well in all honesty you're better served going through the archives than asking flat out, though i know that's easier said than done. i haven't written straightforward bios for any of my ocs as they stand now (and a lot of the stuff i did write about bibi was back when this community was pretty new and my ideas were even foggier than they are now), and i'm much more of a drawfag than a writefag, apologies for any confusion this causes

You know, something I noticed is that unlike the other two "bad guys" of /tog/ (I say two because Franco is really more like a second protagonist with genuine convictions) (technically, Alex is not a bad guy but he's so incredibly flawed that he crosses from being an antihero into just an agent of chaos that can be the bad guy at times), Alex is the only one that doesn't fester as a result of his parents but instead festers as a result of the ABSCENCE of his parents. Originally he was supposed to be a pure sociopath because I thought psychopaths were cliche, however now his ASPD is a bit more mixed, which I did to explain why he didn't need to go through Lin levels of trauma in order to turn out the way he is. I find this revelation interesting, I honestly thought Tesoro and Hemlock were just naturally awful people like Alex due to socio/psychopathy but it seems that their bitchmoms had more of a role in their evil than I thought. This does bring in the question of nature vs nurture. Would they have turned out this way if their upbringings are different? How much of their cunning is natural and how much had to be gained? How much of who they are gets broken by their ultimate defeat? To my knowledge, psychopathy is naturally ingrained if inherited while sociopathy is inherited but has to be brought out by trauma, but it can't be brought out by teaching sociopathic actions to someone. ah, correction, tesoro's mom was nothing other than coddling. the way i picture it she was probably from some sort of disadvantaged background and fought her way out of it. so as an adult she makes sure her kid never wants for anything the same way she did. i think i mentioned once she raised him to be ruthless, and what i meant wasn't that she abused him, but instilled in him the exact mindset needed to grow into an entitled piece of shit. my "background" in psychology comprises of like 2 courses i did eons ago to fulfill part of my degree requirements so i'm no expert on the subject but the impacts of nature and nurture on a person's profile were a point of debate with no clear winner in sight. to a degree, tes is "naturally" awful because he's a reincarnation of an infamously greedy king, to a degree, it's learned awfulness because he's lived his life long enough using people and getting away with it by being sly and pretty that he no longer expects consequence for it.

but here's the kicker. this is all ultimately a bit.....meaningless? because of what he's supposed to represent conceptually, which is the unchangeable, unkillable past, which unfortunately solidifies the "nature" argument from an out of universe perspective and also means that tesoro can never truly depart from who and what he is. tesoro is very much A Character, rather than a person (and honestly, this goes for all of my ocs save maybe nyx, who's probably the closest to feeling like a real human being since i deliberately gave her a set of fairly mundane personal struggles), because he's meant to embody an idea. why else does he go for bibi's left side and reopen her koraidon wounds after she falls back into old, bad habits and tries to play hero for someone again (with, of course, some emotional manipulation on his part)? why is he a revenant, a memento of the past, instead of a regular human, a much more grounded and believable approach? it's because i'm a hack writer making a clumsy, heavy handed metaphor about how the past haunts the present for the sequel to an unwritten children's story that honestly wouldn't even need one, and i've committed to the bit. though i guess if you wanted realism you wouldn't be talking to the guy who involves literal miracles and reincarnation in their work

Yeah, this is classic ASPD. Socio/psychopaths are highly over represented in positions of economic and political power and it’s basically impossible for a “normal” person to remorselessly push others around THAT much and not feel any remorse for it. Genetically speaking, it probably manifested halfway in his mother due to facing economic adversity.

Yeah but not all regions do it. Kalos isn't the ENTIRETY of France. Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh aren't the entirety of Japan. Unova and Orre aren't the entirety of America. Galar and Paldea just seem to be the main ones that occupy their whole countries while the rest are just states/sub-regions of the countries.

She is not a soulless person, but also doesn't emote. She does not care for romance, yet she is (sort off?) attracted to females. She isn't a warlord only, but she focus 24 hours of her time fighting and training.
I feel the interesting part of her character are her Pokémon, since they also have their own personalities, and they bounce them around while interacting with Emily. I want to see more of that: a day she puts her fuck off sword inside the sheat and asks her team "we have a day off, what do you want to do?"

As by design. She's a paradoxical girl who's traits still co-exist properly within her. She doesn't overtly show interest in romance but when a girl catches her eye, a subtle shift in behavior can be noted. She has no interest in being an outright warlord but she still trains and fights constantly because she simply wants to get stronger cause to her strength and power are freedom and her own path to transcendence from mundane mediocrity. She wants to be free and to also improve herself. As for a day off for Emily and her Pokemon, that will probably come a few chapters later of the fic while they wait for Arai to dig up more leads on the group they're taking the fight to. My main issue is mostly just people interpreting Emily as meaner and colder than she actually is. She's not a social butterfly but she's not some outright anti-social edgelord either.

In the very initial draft (read: absent-minded daydreaming for a few minutes at work) of Franco's origin episode, I had briefly entertained the idea that the secretary accompanying him would be a different woman from the one seen in the main story, with the major twist at the end involving her being thrown to the wolves and having the more familiar, sarcastic woman take her place. It would have been the reason why his secretary wasn't given a name up until now--simply because she was that disposable.
This ended up being pretty mean-spirited and wouldn't line up with Franco's character or Phos's motivations, so I quickly dismissed that in favor of shining the spotlight on a fan favorite instead, and I think it's better this way.

From the last thread, I had the idea of an immortal character with long-lived Pokemon. I don't know if she'd be wild or sophisticated, so I'm thinking of drafting both concepts out.

When Alex's Dreepy finally evolves, it gets into a few mishaps that leads to him shipping it off to a training camp. It doesn't come back until the very end of Act 4 when it's already evolved. During its training period it repeatedly had its Dreepy taken away from it, it was put in a cage and Drakloak was forced to go through increasingly difficult obstacle courses in order to rescue it, repeatedly. It gets shipped back to him once it has evolved. Its handlers wore masks that they frequently changed out in order to avoid it leaving a lasting impression. This is the reason that Dragapult is so incredibly agile, and it also serves to make Alex's exploits in Act 4 more difficult. It has no knowledge that Alex was the one who shipped it off. This is the closest that Alex has ever come to genuinely abusing his Pokemon, and when it comes back to him I am considering having a rare bonding moment where it tackle-hugs him. After all that time training it's just happy to see its master again. Arceus forbid that it ever finds out the truth, though.

I would only include held items if someone wanted a Smogon setup based on Alex's team. I guess his Absol would have one of those Mega Stone necklaces that they had in XY before they switched to the Mega Stone just floating in out of nowhere. David makes his team hold their Mega Stones if he needs access to the Mega Evolutions quickly, but in Swampert's case, David does this so he isn't as strained when reaching the Ultima evolution. Since both take a lot of mental strain, and Ultime requires a "fusion", using the stones is easier than forcing it and then jump to it.
But when he doesn't need to use Mega Evolution, his team has personal favorite items. Swampert like Nevermelting Ice, because he uses it as ice anywhere for his drinks (he likes them fresh), Blaziken likes Charcoal so he can write and draw on paper (David tried pencils before, but claws are trickier than hands, so he ends up breaking them), and Sceptyle likea Blackglasses to nap under the sun (he got "burned" once, so he nows carries a small box with sunblock and skin lotions).

Ultima evolution is a David skill. You see, when he was at Sootopolis, he survived an underground volcano explosion. In this explosion, he and Swampert got "corrupted" with Mega Energy.
During his time in the hospital, he started to study about evolution methods. And when he became the Frontier Ruler in the Battle Frontier, he got the resources to do small experiments. This also lead to his fall and his transformation into a region wanderer.

The Ultima Evolution works as some sort of Reburst, but instead of fusing yourself with a Reburst gem, (you) fuse your soul with your Pokémon. Not any Pokémon, only your most trusted friend. Like Emily's Mawile, or Alex's Dragapult, or Silas's Volbeat.
This only works if both trust each other to the degree of both life and death (sorry Alex), and they AREN'T afraid of the outcome.
First, your Pokémon must reach his full potential (fully evolved, level 100). Then, he needs to push itself further (those with mega evolution obtain this part easily, others have to CREATE their mega). Finally, both must synchronize PERFECTLY.
Now, the most dangerous part: soul fusion. You accept your Pokémon as he accepts you, and "become one". Your body will fall (like if you died), and your Pokémon's body will suffer modifications at match speed. This is both hurtful as powerful. When under control, the pain dissipates, and a massive power surge comes out.

Now, here is the problem: David hasn't controlled this power, and he never will. Turns out the final step is accepting becoming one, so David (the human) has to die so Swampert (the Pokémon) gets that power permanently.
He will hold it for longer over time, but only at the end of his days he will meet another OC of mine: a "human" Pokémon. He bestows this evolution to him, and passes away. As for my other OC, he will become the first Pokémon with a natural 1000 BST.

Well, you guys already know my life is nothing (but a long string of improbabilities). I have two OCs that are based off of a dream I had roughly a month ago. The male OC went to an academy of sorts and gets into a love square with 3 girls. They eventually rudely dump him and after some sulking, he is greeted by a female OC from Kalos and eventually gets into a relationship with her. When the 3 girl OCs confront him about getting together with another girl instead of them, the Kalos OC tells them to fuck off.

Sorry for the brief summary. The male OC is from Alola and his team is:

While we're on the subjects of dreams, I figured I should share two of my own: the first involved a normal day of posting, with one exception, Phos Guy attached an image of South Park to every post he made. The second one involved the thread task being "Draw your OC doing something uncharacteristic" and it was a drawing made by me (in my head it looked like something made by someone made by a decade of experience) Alex playing volleyball on the beach with Kingdra. He was jumping to hit the ball back to Kingdra. The post had a shit ton of replies wondering why this was uncharacteristic of him.

Not only would that have been one more thing to keep track of and draw at a time when I was working with nothing more than a wireless mouse and basic MSPaint, but it also detracts from her character. There's a femme fatale elegance to her beneath the belly shirt and ripped pants that a tattoo or piercing would only detract from.

i did bibi trivia already but as for the other 2

- whereas bibi starts late at 14 and tes about on time at 10, alto becomes a trainer early, meeting toxel at about 7 or 8

-he saw zigzagoon digging through the trash on a vacation to galar about a year later and begged his parents to let him keep it

-he's deathly scared of bug types, but funnily enough the big ones like scolipede or volcarona scare him less than stuff like caterpie or joltik

-people may trash on his singing but he's known in the local music scene for covering for people's bassists if they're unable to make a gig

-his hair is naturally 4 different colors and it's a bitch to get the top layer dyed black

-tesoro could probably be richer if he was more willing to part with treasures he finds on his travels, he has some relics he found diving off the coast of undella that are worth a pretty penny but refuses to part with them

-loves making a quick buck by poolsharking when he goes somewhere new

-has recurring nightmares about escaping a crumbling castle. no idea what that could be about

-i'd imagine having spent a lot of time in kalos and hoenn looking for a mega stone he develops a preference for their foods, ramen places in hoenn are probably the only times he makes an exception and eats foods that aren't expensive, fancy, or very lean

-is barely remembered by the other staff and students at naranja bar raifort, he's got an odd tendency to slip through the cracks of people's memories

When I was a kid I came up with a trainer who had a Beldum serving as a prosthetic forearm
I could never decide if said Beldum was either their partner Pokemon in battling or strictly like real life support dogs for blind people and doesn't do fights at all (and bypasses the 6 Pokemon at a time rule)

little of column a and a little of column b, he never even really "officially" starts up a band or anything, he's a bit too uh. dedicated to his artistic vision for anyone to want to properly work with him, so the only performers he regularly sings with are his own pokemon, the only one of which actually having an appealing voice being his primarina. he eventually opens up some record/instrument shop, and i imagine he sets up a stage where he performs, but he also lets other up and coming artists in mesagoza use it too. while people may hate alto's singing, i wouldn't go so far as to say anyone actually hates *him*, even if between the chuunibyou act and terrible voice he can definitely be annoying at times. nothing his friends can't stomach though. and sure people groan whenever he gets up on stage, but they appreciate what he does for the local scene.

Well, I never played gen 5 (mainly because I haven't emulated it), but it's NYC, so I imagine lots of restaurants, those alley shops where they sell slices of pizza, maybe a hot dog vendor. As for shops, something for your car, a laundry place, and some old fix shop that for some reason is still running.
And don't forget the gift shops, even if we are miles away from Time Square, yet "I love NYC" is everywhere.

Bro, I think you should play Gen 5. NYC is only Castelia, the rest of Unova is NY and Black City in particular is a neo-noir caricature of American capitalism (kind of like Gotham in Pattinson’s Batman but without the insane crime rates), or at least it is according to Phos Guy.
