Are any of the numbers worth anything if you don't care about the swarm Pokemon? I'm playing Silver.
The battle rematches seem worthless unless there's some high level trainers in the last routes.

I got a question, and it can be applied to every pokemon game: why do trainers and NPCs only have 1-4 pokemon? I mean, I'm over with all 6 slots filled, inherently I have the advantage. It feels like if this was a gunfight I'd be strapping a revolver while my opponent has a derringer. Why don't trainers and their ilk have 6 pokemon?

When you think about it, imagine the difference between 1 and 6 pets and you will see why the vast majority of people will stick to 1-2, 3 already becomes rare and 4 is overkill. 5 and 6+ reserved for professionals who dedicate themselves specifically to it.
Granted Pokemon are more convenient in certain aspects involving Pokeballs but they are still living beings and most of them aren't smarter than pets, however infinitely more dangerous.

The player character in all games is out to become a Pokemon Master, spending most of their time travelling from region to region to catch mons, participate in the league challenge and topple the evil team plans all at once. At some point NPCs will recognize you are no ordinary trainer.

GAME FREAK explained this as to do with how difficult it is to train, feed, groom etc. a full team of six Pokémon. That's why only Champions, rivals and the player has six Pokémon. Even five or four is rare, only really being seen with Gym Leaders, Elite Four members, and antagonist team captains.

I guess that also justifies the fact full battles aren't a common competitive format, since it would be unfair against the average trainer who is already pretty good for using 3 mons effectively.
The guys with 6 are absolute monsters in-universe, unless it's the guy with 6 magikarps or a breeder who raises other people's mons.
