If anyone dropped the show when SM came out, it'd be because of things like:
>fans that hated XY going all serious ended up watching SM go too far in the other direction>the few fans that liked XY for taking a serious direction in the franchise got mad because SM was so kiddy>an even softer, more cartoony artstyle>tied to a gen that had a lot of people finally realize the games were getting a lot simpler per gen>came right after the absolute trashfire that was the XY ending and Ash getting GM fiat right in the fucking face of literally everyone, including possibly the writers themselves to the point where the writers had to straight-up stop pretending to ignore game logic just to make Ash lose>no real gym league>silly school plot>hardly any stakes, a simple slice of life with goofier humor than usual for the franchiseI like the SoL vibe of SM, though I still did my usual ritual of skipping the finale arc like I do every gen.
