As I’ve gotten older, I have moved past Pokemon a bit. Nostalgia kind of holds me back if I’m honest, but I do have an issue with newer generations. Mostly with them being kind of bad constructively. Here’s what I mean;
Example - Sword and Shield. The pacing is awful. Having a lot pokemon in a game is cool from a player perspective, but it’s hard to immerse yourself in the main campaign when you can catch around 30 different pokemon on one route…in one patch of grass…all of which will give you exp. You can fill more than one box by the first gym (you can send pokemon to the pc BEFORE you even get to one in X and Y). By the time you get to the first gym, by level cap standards, your starter should be evolved. Elaborating, because they throw so many pokemon at you, it’s very hard to actually grow attached to them. You’ll probably find something you want to try out enough to give it a spot on your team, causing you to “rotate”. (Quotations because the average casual or blind player wouldn’t likely do that on their first playthrough).This even includes your starter, which is odd, since (correct me if I’m wrong) they prefer the term “first partner pokemon” because starter implies you won’t hang onto it for your whole journey. Not to mention you have to play “where’s Waldo” with any of the new ones introduced, since for some reason, they aren’t that common after the first gym. This seems to be very consistent with newer games. They seem to be super linear and I can only give so much grace to the reason being the switch to 3D. You’d think exploration would get better, but it seems areas exist more for the discovery of a new pokemon rather than world building. Frigibax is a new and rare ice pokemon. To find it, they made a random hole in a random ice mountain with virtually nothing interesting leading up to it or leading you BACK so you can MAYBE find it by entering and REentering until it shows up.
