Expanding my horizons and playing other games is what made me realize more and more that (especially modern) pokemon games are objectively mediocre or just good at best, it just has an addictive gameplay loop and good monster design. In terms of storytelling, art direction, soundtrack, and game design outside of the combat system, mainline pokemon games rarely if ever go beyond satisfactory. Sometimes they outright shit the bed in these aspects like the art direction of swsh, bdsp, and sv is horrendous. The soundtracks are usually good I'll give them that, but mostly not exceptional or outstanding.
They are mass produced products, not art.
