Unova was a literal circle, and every 3D game was getting worse and worse in map design, culminating in Galar being one big literal hallway.

At that rate I'm glad they abandoned the route design. At least SV put the fun back into exploring the region again without feeling too handholdy.

The world map dumbs down the routes, but they're not circular at all. Also, the dungeons the game had were among the best in the series.

Unova's Clay Tunnel is a major standout. Reversal Mountain is also great. And Victory Road in BW2 is my favorite Victory Road in the entire franchise.

They're better designed.
Bigger, fun to explore, and they're not one-offs that you just go through once and then never again.
In terms of dungeon design I would rank the games:
Gen 5 > Gen 4 > Gen 1 > Gen 6 > Gen 3 > Gen 2 > The rest are shit.
