Because Johto is small weak backwater hick region with no culture that only exists as a fly over region for people visiting KANTOOOOOO, and all the pokemon are worthless shitters or babies or just tacked in to KANTOOOOOOOO families Pokémon. Most of the dex is lame or kantomons so I couldn't get a full team I liked
The pacing bored me
The encounter tables are ridiculous
The boss battles are crippled
The level-curve was genuinely crippling
Most of the game is unmemorable

I loved Platinum and going into HGSS I was excited but instead I just experienced this bewildering disappointment I couldn't put my finger on. Years later here people discuss why Johto is flawed and it all starts making sense.

the game is clearly designed with post game in mind. it wants you to have new pokemon to catch in the post game and there's an entire second region full of trainers and 8 more gyms. it's not like you can't do anything with Houndour, Slugma and Murkrow once you beat Lance. Sneasel was added to the Ice Pat in Crystal and Misdreavus became obtainable on one of the new routes in HGSS

What you are describing is not a HGSS/Johto exclusive problem. GameFreak generally disregards cross gen evos when it comes to remake games with the exception of ORAS. FRLG doesn't let you get any cross gen evos until the post game. LGPE and BDSP outright cut future cross gen evos entirely.

Also Murkrow (along with Larvitar) is available in the Safari Zone by default (meaning you don't even have to deal with the block mechanic people hate) and Slugma is available in Violet City (admittedly you have to look up the Prismo code to be sure you get Slugma but its a small price to pay considering its may very well be the earliest a Pokemon game has ever let you get a non-starter before Gen 6).

a 5% night-only encounter in one route is not acceptable for how terrible it is. forest area only has a 50% chance to spawn in the safari zone the first time around, so if you miss it it's completely not worth it to wait around

No they aren't. Murkrow and Larvitar aren't in the Peak area, so it's either get lucky or get cockblocked for 3 hours. You even catch Geodude in the first challenge, so you can use that over Larvitar.

I would argue that >>56075133 was referring more to how Johto pokemon were both rare encounters,and BAD pokemon. Like I love me my Noctowl, but most still chose pidgey for obvious reasons. Misdreavus being the new ghost on the block, but not even the ghost gym could be bothered to have ANY TRAINER use it. It was just a sad state. But Johto can still have good, we just cannot blind ourselves that it has flaws, no game is perfect.

There are better examples of Gen 2 Pokémon being complete shit and rare but Hoothoot is not one of them. Pidgey is overrated garbage and hoothoot isn’t even that hard to get, and it actual got much better in HGSS due to the special split and gaining more moves Ana coverage while Pidgey line is still as shit as ever only being worth anything for in game after getting its Kanto privilege stone in XY. The only thing Pidgey has over Hoohtoot is the Game Freak shoves Pidgey fucking everywhere to a such a retarded degree that it’s guaranteed to be the very first flying type you see unless you go out of your way to play at night

Again while HGSS did improves thing a bit I do agree it should have done a better job at highlighting the Gen2 Pokemon to incentivize people to get acquainted then to instead of leaning on KANTOOOOO Pokemon.

Loved it as a kid, except for electric types. I don't like Ampharos and other ones are shit, other than legendary poke. I thought Kanto was some weird demo and never tried it, once I got hall of Fame it was game over for me so level curve didn't bother me.

Half the time I’m playing Johto, I feel like I’m resetting the GB clock or in the DS settings changing the time to access something.
The Pokemom availability is the worst of any gen, and nearly all NPC fights are lackluster.
It simply isn’t an enjoyable experience.
