Generally mecha fans don't get the appeal of it either, but will fight you to the death because "it's cool"
And it is cool, but the genre itself is mainly kids shows and those that do try to branch out usually just end up full of plot holes and convoluted to hell.
But in this context mecha is interchangeable with the pokemon concept. Except your little pals are made of metal instead of being whack ass animals. Which is a downside if you're a cuddler, but makes a lot more sense when you're forcing them to fight with earth rending powers.
