Psychic was supposed to be a rare and powerful type like Dragon. As of gen 6 they were nerfed equally with Dark and Fairy as the main counters and Steel resisting both. Problem is Psychic isn't nearly as impressive as Dragon on the offensive side so the nerfs weren't balanced out. Psychic is also weak to arguably the best move with good distribution, UTurn. Then there's the fact Dark and Ghost continue to get stronger every generation and are probably the strongest offensive types nowadays.

The problem is that Psychic sucks, they're weak to some of the best moves in the game, Ghost is completely broken and Gamefreak just keeps creating more broken ghost-types.

At least Psychic doesn't have have a large majority of its moves below 100% accuracy and it doesn't get dicked by most priority moves, not are a majority of Psychic type Pokemon are shoehorned into the same cookie cutter shit of "slow and defense".

The real issue is that Past Paradoxes got the special treatment all
>Ability is boosted by Sun, which is more general as there are far more Sun based abilities than Electric Terrain
>The Sun setters in the game are just way better than the Electric Terrain setters besides the boxart legendaries who are pretty even in OPness
>They also get the better typings and stats in general too with only a few exceptions

Psychic is deliberately a weaker type due to its sheer abundance, much like Flying, Grass, and Normal. Water is the exception for its defensive utility but is a mediocre offensive type outside of rain.

The past trio are still unilaterally better in the VGC. Raging Bolt is a staple, and Wake + Gouging are niche picks both with better usage rates than any future trio mon. Meanwhile the best future, Crown, is mogged by Armarouge and the other two aren't even worth thinking about.
