Although Ashnime was watched by both sexes, most of these audience are males.
After 25 years of mostly male audience, TPC felt it was a time for change to fit current global trends (e.g SDG), so they killed off Ash in the anime & focus less on the male game characters.
But of course, TPC did came out a statement saying Ash is out somewhere in the world, still travelling. They said this to prevent a backlash by the mostly male audience. Because in reality, that means Ash will never be mentioned or seen again in the franchise (except Masters)
