they probably don't sell enough to make up for increasing development costs, especially because now there is no handheld so every spinoff would have to be a full fledged console game which takes a lot of time and money to develop, and which they can barely achieve in their mainline games. so at the end of the day, why bother exerting themselves when they're already making record profits without producing spinoffs?

but it both comes down to the same issue: they're not willing to spend the money on it. whether it's hire talented graphics artists for their main development team, or invest in a 3rd party to develop a spinoff. they've deemed it's not worth the expense. that's all these decisions boil down to.

GO singlehandedly makes more money than all prior Pokemon games combined on an annual basis, they don't need spinoffs anymore.
Even other mobile spinoffs aren't worth their costs, GO is literally the only lucrative spinoff title as a result.

As much as I like Gamefreak taking a year off polishing their games, I would have preferred that there was a proper spin-off game or two in place of the main series instead of all the mobile stuff. 2024 is lacking in the Pokémon department.

You could apply that complaint to every moba and you would still be correct. At least Unite does the "modern" thing of putting most casuals in botmatches, but if you play long enough you'll end up in masters no matter how shit you are.

And if they were solely targeting autistic manchild fuckwits and no-one else, they may do just that (look at bethesda and skyrim). They're targeting children, which means constantly shitting out core games to keep them invested, as the spin-offs have seen their day. GO's cheaper, more profitable and can be played on any parent's phone, unlike the spin offs.

It's an accessibility thing first and foremost with 90% of Nintendo's properties. They want dumb kids to be able to play it but enough nostalgia and time sinks to keep older players entertained as well. I don't think Pokemon is any different in this regard.

Funny you mention Bethesda though. Part of the reason Starfield flopped as hard as it did was them leaning too hard into this idea that they needed to make a big expensive game for grown ups.

Most before 2015 when the freemium and mobile shift happened. There are some games like Channel where only hardcore fans could get some enjoyment outside of the game's intended age demographic, but nothing truly bad in the handhelds and consoles aside from Dash. As of 2015, that has flipped to there only being a few games that I could recommend at all. Freemium (along with gacha lootboxing and live service) is such a predatory business tactic that I can't recommend a spinoff game with it, moreso if the game could've been and would've been better without that model such as Picross (3DS), Duel, and Masters.

That's the biggest problem I have with mobile games and games of similar ilk; freemium payment models and shallow gameplay, and they tend to coincide with each other. Again, Masters could have been a fun social sim + triple battle game with its concept (As is just about everything with Pokémon, let's be real.), but being cursed to become a png lotto roller for phones with a Pokémon skin made it dead on arrival in my eyes.
