Even back in GS, seeing Geodudes and Zubats frustrated me.
Conversely, I think a good example of genmixing would be Marill in RSE. Marill would almost never get used in most people's GSC play-through but it feels like cornerstone of a lot of people' RSE. A midgame, rare Pokemon becomes an useful early game Pokemon, giving people a new way of using it. A lot of Kanto pokemon just end up in the same roles they had in Kanto, down to the time in the game you catch them.
