Those ones let you make teams and use them to their full potential because there was an actual battle system and more than 5 trainers, and in the case of older gens you'd get certain points you could take different routes through the region. In PLA you must always go to fieldlands and then the shitty swamp in that order and can't leave them until you've grinded enough research points.
Other games also have online and repeatable facilities if you want to factor those in.
Sure, you CAN use different Pokémon each time you play PLA but you're encouraged to frequently swap them out for the dex points and there's a lack of trainers so there is no sense of team building. You want to just throw a ball at them rather than engage in battle 90% of the time anyways. I don't know why people act like Pokémon GO for consoles is the best game ever when it lacks all of the variety and depth
