How come they had to resort to shilling older gen Pokemon so heavily in the latter half of Gen 5?

Reaction to BW was that bad that B2W2 had to bring back old Pokemon and old trainers (PWT) for nostalgiamaxxing and that continued into XY with the Kanto starters, Legendary birds, Mewtwo, Snorlax, Lapras, etc. And then SM continued on that with Alolan variants and bringing Red and Blue back.

B2W2 was always gonna have older mons and the PWT. BW teases PWT with Clay and the postgame of BW already reintroduced older mons in Unova.

Actually, if you were there at the beginning of Gen 5, oldgen shilling were almost extinct. Then BW started to receive heavy backlash for "lacking the traditional Pokemon feel". If you look at BW Pokedex, you can see why. GF caved in to the loudest minority, thinking this small group of schizos were the "voice of fanbase". Then BW2 happened and that's the beginning of GF adopting the "if there's no Gen 1 reference in it, it ain't a Pokemon game" docrine.

I doubt Gamefreak even knew those people existed, they would pay attention to either review scores (which were positive btw) or Japanese feedback. X and Y started development around the time of BW's release. Nothing was going to influence decisions being made there.

BW is such a strange anime season. Yeah their plans for Team Plasma were ruined by the earthquake but they hardly tried to salvage things. Why was Ash's team so shitty? They could have at least evolved Scraggy and Boldore. The team is so fucking awful they brought in Charizard, that's fucking terrible.
