Back then unless you were rich you got one game and you played that or went back to previous games you've already played through. Then some weeks or months later you got another game. So you spent a lot of time replaying and re-exploring areas to look for hidden content, easter eggs, etc.
Today most people run through a game as fast as they can and go on to the next game in the pile of 20 or so they grabbed at the latest Steam sale or whatever.
