The exact same thing that went wrong with ORAS. People wanted Emerald and Platinum remakes or at least RS and DP remakes with Emerald and Platinum's updates. What we got were RS and DP remakes that wanted little to do with the updated versions.

at least ORAS tried to make up for it with some new shit delta episode, dexnav, megas, every pokemon up to Gen VI, etc.
