>>56145740By that point Misty was already pretty worn out and barely had a role, replacing her with May let Ash grow a bit from his rookie self by passing that role to May, and Misty herself got some growth through those specials. It was for the best for everyone, though it might have been better to give it a proper ending and start with an entirely new cast.
