Capturing, collecting, battling em
Some of them are cute, some are cool, some are really fuckin ugly
Some are unbelievably stacked, others are so pathetic the world tries to forget them
You go on cool adventures with some guys you found walking around. It’s pretty cool

This is honestly one of the good things about gen 2 that I really enjoy. You are shown Dark Cave on your way to Violet, but you're never told to explore it. They leave it to you when you get Flash, Rock Smash and Surf. Mt. Mortar requires little effort to get through if all you're doing is going from Ecruteak to Mahogany while exploring everything there is optional. Whirl Islands tease a dungeon behind whirlpools but you're never sent there plot-wise. Everything about places like these was up to you to explore. Now, some of the rewards were weak (or non-existant in the case of the Ruins of Alph) but its the concept I'm talking about: show something, let curiosity take over.

Yeah, see, there's the problem: it's a great idea with bad execution. Had the fight with the Karate King been available right after leaving Ecruteak, you'd get a nice reward for veering off the path. They could have put Larvitar in the back where you needed Waterfall, which gives you incentive to explore much later on.
